'FLAMES DESTROY CABIN OF FRENCH BARK 1 WHILE VESSEL IS ANCHORED AT PAPEETE The Fanny, Loaded With Copra for Australia, Catches Fire From Capsized Lamp and Narrowly Escapes Total Destruction---Mariposa Arrives From the Transport Crook Reaches Port From the Philippines o ‘ Tahiti and HE Oceanic Steamship Company's liner Mariposa, which arrived yes- terday from Tahiti, brings news of the narrow escape from destruc- | tion by fire of the French bark | Fanny. The Fanny arrived at Papeete October 12 from Bordeaux. She loaded | copra for Sydney and on November 11, a few days before she was to have sailed, a capsized lamp set fire to the cabin. The flames burned with great ferocity and for a time it seemed as if nothing could | however, and with such assistance as | came from the shore the fire was con- | fined to the after part of the vessel. The | cabin was gutted, but beyond some possi- | ble damage by water the copra with | which the Fanny was loaded escaped | without injury. When the Mariposa left ! the work of repairing the damage was | weil under way and 1t was expected that | by November 2 the Fanny The cargo was All hands were on board, | would be | | | AMERICAN SHIP WHICH WAS OVERDUE, BUT WHICH IS REPORTED SAFE. : ) from Manila too late to pass quarantine, Her passengers will be landed this morning. He ran to the corner and saw two men in the mid- dle of Stockton street chasing a Chinese. Murphy grabbed hold of one of the men ard called upon the other to stop, but he continued to run and Murphy threw his club at him, but missed him. Murphy recognized his prisoner as Les- [ ter Watson, whom he had arrested about tkrec weeks ago for entering a room at | 208 O’'Farrell street and stealing a mani- cure set and other articles. The occupant | of the room refused to prosecute the case | and Police Judge Conlan had todismiss it. | The Chinese, who works at 33 Stockton | street, said he was on his way to China- | town when the two men made a jump for | him and he sprang into the roadway and | ran, shouting for help. When Watson ! was searched a revolver was found in his pccket. He was locked up in “the tanks” pending developments. | Chief Wittman was highly pleased at | the capture cf Watson, as he has reason | to believe that Watson is one of the two | men who have recently held up and| robbed four Chinese at different times in the neighbgrhood of Pine and Powell streets. He answers the description given by the Chinese and they will be asked to | call at the City Prison to see if they can identify him. Policeman Mulcahy chased ‘Watson several blocks last Tuesday night, but failed to catch him. Both he and Murphy are satisfied they know Watson's companion and they expect to have hfm under arrest soon. A CONTRADICTION. . Geary-Street Circulars Not Printed h: “Rat” Printing Office. To the Public and Trade Unions of San Francisco: We desire to contradict a visor Braunhart at a public meeting held on Monday evening, November 24, wherein he accused Mr, Horace G. Platt, Presi- dent of the Geary-street Railroad Com- | pany, of issuing 'a circular and other printed matter from a “rat” printing of- | ce. We desire to state that, with the excep- tion of one other union printing offic that we have done the entire work refer- | red to by Mr. Braunhart and feel that| his statement was made with a full| knowledge of the fact that the work came | from our office, which is a union office | and always has been since the day we opened our doors; and belleve his motive is to deceive the public, as well as the members of the different unions of San Francisco, in order that they may vote | in the manner that may please him. This | being a fact, we respectfully advise all members of the trades unions to carefully investigate the public statements of Mr. Braunhart. PHILLIPS, SMYTH & VAN ORDEN. <The house of Phillips, Smyth & Van Orden is and has been, as far as my knowledge goes, one of the most fair and reputable union offices in San Francisco, and it is hoped no harm will be done the firm by any statement to the contrary.
