Now that the battle j of ballots is over and the standard bearer Y‘cf Democracy has given way “to Dr. ‘George C. Pardee, the men who fought | for Lane's election are wroth at certain { members of the committee. | Lane's friends declare that the present committee did not work in harmony; that, instead of helping to advance the cause of the candjdate for Governor, they did everything in their power to injure his fight. As evidence of their dissatisfaction, a | number of prominent Democrats through- out the State called upon Mr. Lane yes- | terday and appealed to him to appoint | fifteen additional members of the com- mittee, as authorized by the State con- vention. The present State Central Committee is | ruled by the “Cabinet,” which is com- posed of men who tried to prevent Lane from receiving the nomination for Gov- | erdor. Ex-Governor Jsames H. Budd, John J. Barrett and Jim O'Brien practi- i cally rule the committee. It is true that Barney D. Murphy is chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee, but his duties are not arduous. The entire committee is dominated by the campaign committee. At the outset of the Demo- cratic compaign the campaign committe found fault with Mr. Lane because the latter’s campaign was being directed from the office of City and County Attor- ney. Lane's friends were given the best places in the itinerary, while the friends of the “Cabinet” were sent into the “highways and byways” to win votes by the magic of their voices. As soon as the “Cabinet” gained contry of the State Central Committee, this state | of things chapged. A. Caminetti was se- lected chairman of the campaign commit- tee at the suggestion of Budd. John J. Barrett was elected a member of the Democratic State Central Committee to il the vacancy caused Dy the resigna- tion of M. F. Tarpey. Immediately upon Barrett becoming a member of the com- mittee, “Jim"” O’Brien had him appointed on the campaign committee. Robert M. Fitzgerald of Oakland, who was friendsy to the “Cabinet,” was also placed on the committee. Budd went to New York to help Hearst win an easy fight, leaving Lane to do the best he gould to avoid inevitable defeat. Caminetti made a few trips to his county to mend his own fences. O'Brien and the rest of the committee took things easy. As a result there was a lack of organiza- tion in the party, and, despite his own popularity, Lane suffered defeat. Last Tuesday Los Angeles rolled up a majority of nearly 7000 for Dr. Pardee, and is now the banner Republican county of the State. Bradner Lee, chalrman of the Republican County Committee of Los Angeles, is here to claim possession of the silken trophy. At a meeting of the directors of the Union League yesterday George H. It is prohable that the Union League Club will charter a special train | for an excursion to Los Angeles. The de- tails of the trip bave not been arranged, but it is expected that Governor-elect Pardee will join the throng and deliver the banner to the stalwart Republicans of Los Angeles. = 283, CALL'S TABLE NOW INCLUDES VOTE OF EVERY COUNTY IN CALIFORNIA With Only a Few Remote Precincts to Hear From Pardee’s Plurality Over -Lane Is Twenty-Eight Hundred and the Official Can- vass of Returns Will Not Change These Figures Materially AN VT DVER HSSETT Blected Railroad Com- missioner in First 4 District. THE FIRSTBORN. Why i it that the firstborn child is so often the healthiest of a family of chil- dren? The reason seems to suggest it- self. As child follows child the mother has less and less vitality; often mnot enough for herself and none, therefore, for her child. 7 Expectant mothers who use Doctor Pierce’s Favorite Pre- scription find that it keeps them in vigor- ous health. They eat well, sleep well” and are mot nervous. When baby comes its advent is practically painless, and the mother is made hap- 5y by the birth of a healthy child. F. ‘'next January, 3 NEW BUGHROD “OF DEMOCATS May Try to Throw Out Los Angeles County’s Returns. Raise Question as to the Validity of Ballots Used There. Special Dispatch to The Call. LOS ANGELES, Nov. S—Amazed and discomfited at the surprising plurality that Los Angeles gave Pardee last Tues- day, the Democrats have been casting abeut for something that will afford tham the basis for a contest, not so much for any benefit that the county ticKet would derive from such contest as for the pos- sible help it might be to the State ticket should Lane dispute Pardee's election. To-day they sprang what was intended as a surprise when it was declared that an attempt would be made to throw out the entire county vote of Los Angeles county. Just who fathered this scheme is not positively known, but it is said to have originated with Abbot Kinney. On the ballots voted throughout Los Angeles County on Tuesday the Board of Supervisors submitted to the people the auestion as to whether monuments or other memorials should be erected on the Courthouse grounds, and to the country voters opportunity was given for an ex- pression of their wishes as to local op- tion in regard to saloon licenses. The Democrats now contend that the placing of these two questions upon the ballots invalidated them and that, there- fore, the entire vote of Los Angeles county could be thrown out. None of the Democratic leaders will admit that they propose taking this matter into the courts, but they hint at mysterious pro- ceedings that may be instituted on Mon- day. The Republicans are not worried by this Democratic bugaboo. Before the ques- tions were placed| upon the ballots the Bceard of Supervisors obtained from the | District Attorney an opinion.as to the leaglity of its action. To-day Assistant| District Attorney Johnstone Jones sald: | “There i{s nothing in this threat. The | law is very plain on this question and had the Supervisors desired to submit fifty questions to the people they had the right to do so. The law plainly provides that this may be done and the Democratic attorneys know it. I would not be sur- prised, however, if some such attempt were made. Why should not the Demo- crats have all the fun out of it they can? They did.not elect an officer in this coun- tv—not even a constable. They have all to gain and nothing to lose by such a contest; but the Republican masses need not be disturbed by any such threat as this.” LEADERS WOULD NAME SPEAKE Four Assemblymen Are Already Prominent in the Race, Now that the election is a thing of the past and it is known just how much strength the various political bodies will pessess in the next Legislature, those in- terested in affairs politic are beginning to figure who will be the next Speaker of the Assembly. So far they have not been able to figure with any degree of certain- ty who will occupy the Speaker's chair though there are a num- ber of politiclans who claim they can name the man. There are four likely candidates in the field and the supporters of each are not a bit backward in announcing that they bave the man. So far the most promi- nent candidates are Arthur G. Fisk of the Thirty-seventh Assembly District, F. C. Dunlap of Stockton, who represents the Twenty-third District; E. D. Knight of the Thirty-fifth District, and W. H. R. McMartin of the Forty-third District, Fisk, McMartin and Knight are all from San Francisco. The wise ones have figured out that some one of these Assemblymen will be selected to wield the gavel at Sacramento next January. It hab been given out that Examiner. and the Cabinet Fisk, and where the friends of the 'newspaper and club - are thickest no name but that of TFisk is heard. E. D. Knight is supposed to be the choice of Dan Burns and his friends and the supporters of Knight are 2s sanguine as the friends of Fisk that their man will win the battle for the Speakership. The other men in the field are Dunlap and McMartin. Dunlap, it is said, is the choice of the State at large and it is claimed that he meets with the approval of a majority of the legislators. Mec- Martin is,the candidate of Martin Kelly, who claims, and his claim is supported by a legion of Kelly's friends, that the rep- resentative of the Forty-third Assembly District will be the man who will be se- lected by the Assembly to rule the des- tinies of the lower hous: —_— BEHEADING OF OFFICIAL - MAY CAUSE UPRISING China’s Dowager Empress Opposes the Execution of the Hu Nan .
