OCTOBER 16 g Time| | Time| H Wi L] | tish Chiets, i mona, of the Game in Their Meeting Before! the Acme Club---Johnson a N a scheduled fifteen-round. . boxing bout that went the limit at the Ac- me Club, Oakland, last night, Abe Attel won the decision ecasily from Aurelio Herrera. - He outclassed the Mexican boxer in .all departments of the fistic game, but could not put him out, al though he nit Herrera all over and when- ever he chose. Attel's ducking, dodging, jabbing and marvelous ability in escaping from dangerous positions were a revela- tion to the big crowd that witnessed the fight. They won applause for him in ev- cry round. o ‘s Herrera was slow and aggressive. He appeared to always have the punch that would ‘do the trick, but try as he would the Bakersfield boy could not land on At- tel. Occasionally Herrera would go into action with a vigor that made his oppo- nent perform at top speed. These mix- ups generally ended with the swarthy fighter moving around fn a bewildered way looking for the elusive Abe, who was never where Aurelio thought he was. The first two rounds were tame, both men exchanging light taps. In the third round. Attel placed four lefts in rapid uccession flush on Herrera’s face and was away without a return. These jabs droused Aurelio and when the bell sound- ed he was hostling Abe around with a volley of swings. Attel continued his left jabbing in the fourth round and 1t the early morning tides are given in the left hand column and the successive tides of the day in the order of occurrence as to time: the | fourth time column gives the last tide of the day, excent when there are but three tides sometimes occurs. The heights given are in addition to the soundings of the United States “oast Survey Charts, except when a minus (—) slgn precedes the height, and then the number given is subtracted from the depth given by the charts. When Abe arose Herrera cornered him and scored several stomach smashes. Both boxers sparred for 4 breathing spell’ in the sixth. In the seventh Her- Tera raised Attel with a hard left swing on the jaw. -Abe brought the crimson froth Aurelio’s nose in this round. Her- fara ran into a left swing in the eighth that confused him for a time. He went at Abe viciously when he rallied, but At- tel was always inside the swings or out of nge. Aftel gave an exhibition of clever duck- ing in the ninth and landed some heavy lefts on Herrera's neck and face. The uext four rounds were much alike, no damage being done by éither fighter. Her- Tera came out with a jump in the last round and went at’ Attel in hammer and tongs style. . He forced his shorter op- ponent around the ring, but shot his bolt in random swings that’ cleared nothing but air. Referee Eddie Smith had noth- ing to do but point to Attel as the win- ner. In the preliminaries Bobby Johnson won from Kid Finnerty in the first round of a scheduled six-round/ go. When Maurice Thompson finished “Alice of Old Vincennes” he was so discour- aged over it that he had almost determined to withhold it from the publishers altogether, when a friend read it, convinced him of its merits and persuaded him to let the public be the judge. The result has been something truly extraordinary in American literature. “Alice of Old Vincenngs” created a big sensation from the very first, and was speedily rushed upon the stage, with Virginia Harned as the star.- And season after season it has been piling up money for both the actress and her manager at such a remarkable rate that the production has never been permitted to leave New York. The book itself has broken zll records, both in the East and in Europe, and now its popularity is invading the West. When, therefore, The Sunday Call began its new litexxry pol- icy of publishing the latest and best $1.50 novels of the day com- plete in two or at the most three editions of the Magazine Section, thereby working a surprising revolution in ".Vestern Jjournalism, it not only secured the exclusive rights to “Alice of Old Vincennes,” but arranged with Byron, the famous New York theatrical photog- rapher, to take twenty-five to thirty full page pictures of the most thrilling and picturesque scenes in Virginia Harned’s grect play to illustrate the book. which will bepublished complete in three num- bers of The Sunday Call, beginning next Sunday, October 19. The photographs are masterpieces, so that you not only get the book, but the whole play from curtain to curtain as well, for 15 | cents. The book will cost you $1.50 at the stores.
