The weak- | ness appears to be due to lessening ap- prehension of unfavorable developménts in New York and the accumulation of funds in the hands of bankers and brok- ers. The market, which supplied itself liberally from the Bank of England just before the advance of the official mini- mum, has still plenty of money at its dis- posal. In the meantime the bank is not in a pesition-to control market rates and borrowers are getting what short loans they require at 2% per cent, or less than the rates paid for money on deposit. The Investors’ Review - deplores the fact that London discount and credit retes are so low, when danger of "an acute kind still exists in New York and brother of Henry, Christian, Fred, Maggic | WHen gold is in such strong demand and Annie Gansberger and Mrs. Robert | €lsewhere. American stocks here are tending upward, but-there is no im- mediate prospect of a boom in any quarter. The attitude of the public con- tinues to be non-speculative and there is no particular disposition to invest in | stodks. Investors generally are walting to see what will mext happen in New York. The fact that the New York as- | soclated banks are availing. themselves of Secretary Shaw's proffered facllities caused surprised comment here, It is considered doubtful whether gold now reaching the United States will ease the situation sufficlently to make speculation | safe. 7 SR A BERLIN BOERSE IS QUIET. German Coal Shares Show an Advance . - of Several Points. BERLIN, Oct. 12.—The Boerse again last week was much under American in- j fluences, and New York reports were watched with very great interest. Never- theless the incident at Montreal and forced liquidation on Wall street had no - marked effect on quotations here, the return of cheap money rates, together with other factors, having given a cer- tain firmness to values. The coal strikes in the United States and France awakened hopes of an im- proved demand for German. coal, espe- cially from France. French speculators were active in buying German coal shares on the Berlin Boerse, and the result of these conditions was a general advance of several points. Iron shares also pro- fited slightly through the week as the re- sult of the announcement of the Trans- vaal tariff changes, which are regarded as opening a better market for German goods. Other industrial shares were quiet. The shares of ocean navigation compa- ! nies were slightly depressed upon the reports of a duller fruit market. Money is again very easy. Call meney reached 2 per cent, at which rate it was - SHOW WERKNESS | abundantly offered. According to the Frankfurter Zeitung almost all the Ger- man money which was recently advanced to New York has been returnéd. Walther and E. S. Jones of this city, Last Wednesday papers locat- ing the mica deposit were filed in the land office at San Francisco. ft is said to be the only discovery of sheet mica yet made in the State. The deposit lles about six miles due east of Soledad, in the moun- tains of Monterey County, and is said to be close to a railroad. The discovery was first made a few years agé by Jones, but as there was an unexpireG entry of a de- serted homestead on the land the matter was kept quiet. It is said the find is quite valuable. A number of prospective pur- chasers have already been negotiating for the property. e WEATHER REPORT., (120th Meridian—Pacific Time.) ter of the late Charles A. and Clara A.
