WILSON, Lacal %fl\clfl. 21, 1902, | SCHOONER HAS EVENTFUL TRIP Captain, Taken Sick, Is Unable to Help ‘Work Her. For Twenty-Five Days Sailor Mans Tiller and Tends Superior. The schooner Helen arrived in port yes- terday morning at 2 o'clock, twenty-five days from Kodiak. She had an-eventful voyage down. She is a small boat, thirty-six feet long and fifteen feet beam, with a depth of five feet, and was manned by two men, her captain and his assistant. Shortly after leaving Kodiak the captain, J. A. Lockhart, was laid low with rheumatism and totally ineapacitated from attending to his duties aboard, This left the sailor to work the schooner alone and attend to the wants of the captain. e “All' night long tor many nights the plueky man stuck to the tiller and faced &ood and bad weather intrepidly. Dur- ing the aay he lashed the wheel and took | what sleep he could. 1In spite of the dif- ferent vicissitudes, the schooner made | pert in twenty-five days from the island and the captain is proud of the man who stuck to his post so manfully. The trip north has not been a futile one, for the captain reports the find of a copper mine, which may make him independegntly rich. The Helen was built about Awo years ago at Sausalito for J. A. Lockhart, a retired sea captain, who set out with her to Alaskan ports. A few days out she went into a bad storm, sprang a leak and ‘was blown southward 500 miles. The cap- tain put in for repairs at San Diego and as soon as the schooner was once more | ready for sea another start was made for | the north. The island of Kodiak was made in fifty-seven days. Captain Lockhart believes in his schoon- er and as soon as he is able will start on another eruise to Alaska. ‘Will Leave for Sausalito To-Day. ‘The Naval Militia training ship Marion will be towed to Sausalito to-day by the State tug Governor Markham and will remain there un- til September 7. Yesterday all Kands were busy putting her into shape for her departure at 8 o'clock this morning. Captain Nerney was superintend- ing matters and lending a helping hand. G. R. Kingsland, the chief engineer, was on hand w?ifl“n‘ with a vim to get his department in order. While the Marion will anchor off Sausalito to-day, she will not go into commission until next “Sunday, when her complement of from 175 to 200 men will go aboard. In the in- terim she will shake down, and her.commis- sariat department and sleeping accommodations will be perfected. During her stay at Sausa- lito her crew will be put through signal and target practice, the abandoning of a ship when she’ is_sinking, putting out- fire aboard ship and other exercises. The duties of the men will be the same as on a man-of-war, and they will be expected to attend to them stript- ly.” Concerts and dances, visiting ships and recelving visits will form the ‘social side of the trip. —— Sailor Falls Off Whartf. Camillo Thompson, a sailor residing at 32 Minna street, narrowly escaped drowning at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. He was sitting on the whart near Henry Peterson's boathouse when he toppled into the water. He was hauled out with some difficulty and taken to the Harbor Hospital, where Dr. Leon- ard attended him. Beyond 4 good ducking he was none the worse for his morning’s experi- ence. AR RN Movements of Steamers. TO ARRIVE. Steamer. From, San Pedro....| San Pedro : Alliance Fortland & Way Ports, Chehdlis .
