L g something of a steam schooner herself, but her parts have so far refused to work in harmony. The Robert Dollar is under contract to tow the Heald to Klamath River, where John F. Heald, her maker, proposes to dredge for gold. The voyage was interrupted for several hours at Lime Point, off which headland the Dollar and her tow were obliged to anchor, owing to a slight breakdown of the Dollar's machinery. Old sallors say the Robert Dollar was scared of her tow and in indignation at such proximi- ty with so unnautical an affair as the Cordelia Heald shook her sides until something broke. She was finally persuaded to perform the duty contracted for by her owner and the voyage was resumed. : The Cordelia Heald was built by John F. Heald on Oakland Creek. The design was all his own and the most critical will admit her strength of timber. She left here for Nome many months ago and brought up in San Pedro, where a start was made for the Klamath River, After eighty-three days of thrilling marine lite, during which the only sailor on board was killed by a swinging boom, she drifted into this port and has ever since been preparing for the voyage commenced yesterday. Will Launch Caisson. The big steel calsson or gate for the new dry- dock at Hunters Point will be launched to-day at the Union Iron Works. This structure is the second of its kind turned out by the Union peo- ple. The first was bullt for the drydock at Mare Island Navy Yard and was a much small- er affair than the one to be launched to-day. Two others, duplicates of the Hunters Point caisson, are In course of construction for the Russien Government. The gate that will be launched this afternoon was designed by How- ard Holmes, consulting engineer for the Hun- ters Point Drydock Company. It is bulilt of steel, is 22 feet long, has 19 feet beam on deck and 13 24 feet wide at the blige line. When empty it draws 19 feet. In use, with the dock filled, its draught s 30 feet. Its height from keel to top deck is 35 feet. It cost about $715,000. Miss Hubacher, daughter of John Hubacher, engi- neer of the drydock, will christen the caisson as it takes the water. The new drydock is rap- idly approaching completion and will be ready for service by the end of the year. It will be one of the largest drydocks in the world and capable of accommodating any ship afloat. R 2 A Vacation for Captain Wolcott. Captain Wolcott of the army transport Crook bas been granted a leave of absence for three months. During his absence Chief Officer F. C. Boyce will command the trooper. This is Cap- tain Wolcott's first vacation since he entered the service about four years ago. \ Captain Sealby Here. Captain Sealby, formerly commander of the Occidental and Orlental Company’s steamship Coptic; is in San Francisco spending part of an extended leave of absence. Since leaving here Captain Sealby has been trading between Lon- don, Cape Town and Australla In command of one of the White Star line’s 12,000 tonners. He made many friends in San Francisco during his service on the Coptic and expects to be kept busy during his stay hunting up old acquaint- ances. —_— Alameda Sails To-Day. Blaine, then Secretary cf State, and the Premier of Newfoundland. The conven- tion on the part of Newfoundland granted ! to United States fishermen considerable | privileges in regard to purchasing bait, i and largely reduced thg duties on a con- | siderable class of American imports into Newfoundland. The Unitec States, on its side. opened its marke to Newfoundiand fisheries’ raw prcducts and confirmed the privi-!| leges of transportation of fresh fish in bond to the United States markets. | The Newfoundland Premier has de-! clared himself in favor of free trade with against a_union of | culmination of twelve years of persistent effort, and only this week was he able to convince the Government of the in- Jjustice done to Newfoundland by the non- ratification of the convention and secure its consent to the resumption of the re- ciprocity negotiations.
