10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1902. BURNING PEAK ALARMS NATIVES Hawaii's Famed Volcano Emits a Volume of Smoke. Visitors on the Mountain Ex- perience a Season of Terror. O R Special Correspondence of The Call. HONOLULU, July 15.—Hawalii’s volcano startied people in its vicinity at 6:45 p. m. July 10 by a violent and sudden outpour- ing of smoke, which ascended in a per- fectly straight column to an altitude of fully 1000 feet. Visitors who had been at the Volcano House for several days were alarmed and the Chinese and Japanese servants fled in terror. After clinging for two days to an up- turned fishing boat and sharing a plug of tobacco with a companion and having no other food, John Soares, a Portuguese fisherman of Puna, bade his companion good-by and allowed himself to sink and be drowned within sight of the coast of Hawali. Soares and his companian, Portuguese named Riberro, left on July | 1 in a fishing boat, intending to catch 2 load of fish and return. Their boat was capsized and an off-shore wind carried them far from land. The two men had only & plug of tobacco with them. For hours they struggled in the open sea, trying to swim and work their boat to shore, but without success. They shared the tobacco and held on for | & night and two days. Then Soares let g0 and sank. O LONDON, July 22.—The House of Com- mons committee appointed to inquire into the question of steamship subsidies was in session this morning and examined Senator G. A. Drummond of Montreal. Drummond- said he had arrived at the conclusion from recent developments of |" American shipping combines that the land lines practically controlled the situation and that the ocean lines were merely ad- juncts, At first sight it would appear that | the purchase of a number of old British | steamers by the American combination could be remedied by bullding new boats. But he believed that if this was done by profitable by the Americans, who, by means of through bills of lading from the producing centers could control freights as well as a considerable portion of the passenger traffics. He believed that the only hope of escape from the control of the American ship- ping combine lay through Canada. There- fore he advocated a speedy up-to-date service of twenty-two knot steamers be- tween Great Britain and Halifax instead of New York. Such a line ought to be| subsidized to the-extent of £300,000 to| £400,000 yearly for ten years, half payable | by Great Britain and half by Canada.
