The federation's nominee for Governor, W. P. Squire of San Jose, was in town yesterday. Squire is a comrade of the Grand Army of the HRepublic. He entered the great conflict for human freedom as a private soldier in the Seventy-fifth Illinols Volunteer Infantry Regime and maintained that honorable position until the finish. He lost one leg at Lovejoy Station, Georgia, in the last battle of the great Atlanta cempaign, but he did not lose his right to be known as a ‘“‘private.”” He cares thing for such military titles as aptain,” “Major,” ““Colonel” and “Gen- eral.”” He carried a gun and used it. He came out as good as he was when he went in, barring the loss of the leg at Lovejoy. Comrade Squire will get a good many votes for Governor. His record as a private citizen equals in merit his rec- ord as a private soldier. Many old soldiers in this off year will vote for him as a matter of Ssentiment. Perhaps this is destined to be a sentimental year in polities. For sentimental reasons, so it is said, the present Governor went to far away San Pedro to get a vindi- cation. There is a sentiment, active and inspiring, that there should be a change in the Executive office in California, and all the political parties are taking notice of it. quire is a Republican. REFUBLICAN PRIMARY LEAGUE. The Central Committee of the Repub- lican Primary League will meet to-mor- row evening at Red Men's Hall, 320 Post street. The committee consists of 428 members of the several district execu- tive committees. Questions relating to the policy of the league in this campaign will be discussed. This evening at Washington-square Hall, corner of Union and Stockton streets, there will be a meeting of the Forty-fifth Assembly District Republi- can Primary League Club. Topics relat- ing to North End improvements and the extension of the seawall will engage the attention of the property-owners of the district.
