NEW YORK, July 9.—The Commercial Ad- vertiser's London financial cablegram says: The forced closing out of Kaffirs was con- tinued this morning, and the market looked panicky at first. South African magnates came, %o the rescue and supported their speclalties.” All of a sudden there was & swing of the pen- dulum and’the frightened bears hastened cover in active shares like East Rand Ind Gold Fields. The close was at the top, but shrewd observers are dublous as to permarience of the recovery, although varlous speculative commitments are being arranged. Americans ‘were strong all day. .There was a sudden de- Money, New York Metal Market. NEW YORK, July 9.—TLocal metal marke steady; was not active buf reflected steady to | firm tone generally. An advance of £1 in the English price of tin was responded to locally by an upturn of about 25 points, spot closing at $28 25@28 50, and firm in tone with a good demand. London closed at £126 15s for spot ard £124 10s for futuves. ‘A decline of 2s 64 abroad in copper had no effect locally, prices here advancing slightly. Standard spot to August closed at $1L 37%@ 11 7B~ lake, $11 95@12 15; electrolytic, $11 95 2 05, and casting at $11 75@11 95. 'London lpot was finally £52°17s 6d and futures £53 There ‘was nothing of feature in lead either here or abroad and prices were unchanged and steady locally at $4 12% B-Qd at London at £11 6s 3d. < In spelter also the same general condition prevailed, the market being firm at $5 1214 and steady abroad at £19. Krnglish iron prices were steady and unchanged at Glasgow, but fractionally higher at Middlesboro at 51s. In the local market the tone was steady, prices remaining as last quoted. Receipts of Potatoes were large, but the market cleaned up well under a steady in- quiry, both for shipping and local use. The top quotation on Burbanks is an outside figure for a few lots of fancy. There are a few small lots coming in from across the bay right along, which generally sell a little higher than | the quotations. Onions were in free supply and prices showed little change. Vegetables were offering freely and prices for most descriptions were lower. Choice Green Corn sold well at sustained prices. Offerings in sacks from Vacaville were mostly poor and sold at bottom prices. Supplies of Tomatoes ‘were excessive, and as there was very little demand for shipping, prices dropped, very few bringing the top quotations. Cucumbers and Summer Squash were easier under heavy re- ceipts, Green Peppers continued to decline. Most of the Asparagus coming in is of poor quality and sells slowly. Some fancy sells in a small way over the quoted prices. The quo- tations on Rhubarb are withdrawn, as .re- ceipts are light and there is very little in- quiry for what comes in.
