THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, JU 24, 1902 PROBING DANIGH TREATY SCANDAL Secretary Hay Forwards Important Lstters to Committee. Minister Swenson Denies the Story That He Sug- gested Bribery. H WASHINGTON, June 23.—The special committee of the House of Representa- tives is investigating charges in connec- tion with the purchase of the Danish ‘West Indies. It resumed its duties to-day end Chairman Dalzell laid before the | members a number of papers, including | letters from the United States Minister to Denmark, Mr. Swenson; Henry White, Secrmrl)‘: of the United States Embassy at London, and Captain Walter Christmas’ | who has been the central figure in con-| nection_with the charges. Secretary Hay | forwarded the letters without commenting | on their contents. Swenson’s letter in-| closes that handed to him by Captain | Christmas, in which the latter states that Neils Gron obtained his confidential report | by foul means; that he has reason to be- | lieve that Gron falsified it and denies a ! number of allegations which it contained. He says he never tried to impress Min- | ister Herring that bribery was the only | way of getting the islands sold. He had | not given the name of any Congressmar in connection with the use of money makes a general denial of several matters. | Minister Swenson says-that in view of | Christmas’ character and ‘“absurd and | contradictory statements,” he attaches no | importance to the letter.” He says the| opponents of the sale of the islands are | using the Gron-Christmas scandal to pre- vent ratification of the treaty. | ‘White's letter is a detailed account of his visit to Denmark to bring gbout an a ment for the'sale of the islands. . H. Rogers-of the Standard Oil Com- any ‘sent a letter in which he says he | gs.d but one interview with Christmas and | that was devoid of importance. He adds: | “The etory he tells as to my claim of the | ownership of twenty-six “United ‘States | Senators; is stmply a falsehood, and so absurd on its face that it is hardly worth | referring to.” rs offered to come as a witness if the committee wanted him. Richard P. Evans, one of the attorneys mentioned, denied some of the statements | mads concerning himself. Rogers will not be asked to appear, but Chairman Dalzell had written him to for- werd an explanation of a dispatch which Christm&s quoted as sent by Rogers, say- | ing the negotiations were again on. The committee also talked over the report and will reassemble later to pass on this branch. NO- STATEHGOD THIS SESSION Action Not to Be Taken on Admission of Territories, Debate on Philippine Bill in House Becomes More Interesting. WASHINGTON, June 23.—A motion was entered formally in the Senate to-day by Quay of Pennsylvania to discharge the Committee on Territories from. further consideration of what is known as the omnuibus territorial bill—a measure to ad- mit as States the Territories of Okla- homa, New Mexico and Arizona. Quay spoke briefly but foreibly in support of his motion, maintaining that both political parties in national convention had pledged themselves to the admission to statehood of the Territories. Beveridge of Indiana, chairman of the | committee, said the measure had been | put over until next session by the com- | mittee because it was not believed there would be time now to consider it properly. No action was taken on the motion. | During the greater part of the session | the unfinished business, the bill ratify- | ing a convention with the Choctaw and | Chickasaw Indians, was under discussion. It was not disposed of. Debate on the Philippine civil govern- ment bill warmed up in the House to- day and henceforth promises to be of a much livelier character. The increased -nterest is due to the injection into the | charged to have been practiced in the Philippines with those which occurred during the Civil War. The subject has been lightly touched upon once or twice before, but attracted little attention until | Grosvenor of . Ohio to-day revived the memory of the extremities to which Grant and Jackson were put during the Rebel- lion. This was followed late in the d: by a speech from Mahon of Pennsyl- vania, in which he paraded the horrors of Andersonville and Libby prisons. He pre- dictad that in the coming elections the American people would stand by the “boys | in blue.” Grosvenor in his speech also defended | the rules of the House against the crit- icism passed upon them and paid a high itl’lbme to Speaker Henderson's impartial- ty. De Armond of Missouri spoke at con- siderable length in opposition to the ad- speakers to-day Were Olmsted of Pennsyl- vania, Williams of_Illinofs, Corliss of Michigan and W. W. Kitchin of North Carolina. Thirty Years for Thirty Dollars. BUTTE, Mont., June 23.—Thirty years for thirty dollars is the sentence given by Judge MecClarnen to-day to William Per- | ry, who with A.
