The defendants are Mary E. Callahan d the San Francisco Board of Educa- on. The complaint alleges that section 1662 of the P »de of California con- flicts wit tion 1 of the fourteenth smendme the constitution of the United St in that it denies the equal 3 nwuu] n of the laws to eitizens of (hi- nese descent. Section 1662 z2mong other thinga b o) nd also to establish separate schools for f Mongolian or Chinese descent. such =eparate schools are established zolian children must not be other schools. (In effect March, 1585.) The complaint avers that megroes, In- diane and Japanese are admitted into the public schools, and that no separate schoole have been established in San Francisco for any race or nationalit other n for children of Chinese parents, and that such race discrimina- tion §s arbitrary and the result of hatrel for_the Chinese race. Wong attended the Clement School from July 22, 191, until March 1, 102, on which latter date the defendants refused to permit him to attend any longer, on the ground thut he was of Chinese de- scent. The complaint asks for an injunc- tion restraining the defendmnts from ex- cluding Weng from the white schools un- til the case shall have been adjudicated. —_—— Fountain Pens. Supervisor D'Ancona informed the Di- sired to know just how the money raised by a special levy is to be spent. He re- quested that a general statement of the President Denman then submitted a list follows: A mew school of twelve rooms to be called belonging to the ci of of building, with grading, etc., hool of twelve classes to be called v School, to relieve the overfow Hearst, Everett, Douglass and cker schools. Superintendent Webster indorsed the recommendations of the Directors, with the suggestion that the Washington School be the first to be built and the Spring Valley School the next. Webster th dispensed with, but the Directors dis- agreed with him. Supervisor Alpers objected to building a schoolhouse on the site selected by the Board of Education in the Sunnyside dis- | trict.
