For two yea! lived with a hu her or their children, e conducted himself, r which has made caused her a | terday, fourteen days ten hour from Panama, with more than 4000 tons of New York cargo and five passengers. The ‘Argyll had a lively experience in a heavy blow on her downward voyage. Part of her cargo got | adrift and for several hours all hands had a hand-to-hand fight with the tumbling freight. Several big puncheons of wine got adrift while some of the crew wer2 engaged in re-stowing the merchandise in No. 4 hold. Everybody but Carpenter Fritz Baldew jumped clear of the roliing casks, which, in spite of their 1400 pounds of weight. were jumping about the hold like balls in a ping-pong fournament. One of the puncheons struck Baldew on the foot, almost severing that member. The puncheons finally smashed. ~ Wading waist deep in California wine, the saflors jumped from their safety perches, gather- ed up the fragments of the puncheons and finished securing the dislodged freignt. Baldew was given such attention as the ship's officers could provide. He was placed in the hospital at Panama until the ship sailed and will to-day be taken to the Marine Hospital, where his foot may have to be amputated.
