Murphy, prominent in church and social circles and treasurer of the Kingsley House fund, was ‘murdered at her home, 6221 Howe street, Bast End, by a burglar this morning. 'The murderer escaped. Miss Murphy was the only sister of lect Counciiman John A. Murphy from the Twentieth ‘Ward and was thirty years old. She, with her brother and two servants, women, lived alone in the house, Miss Murphy was sleeping on the second floor. Bhe was an expert with the revol- ver, having practiced many vears for the purpose of protecting herself in the event of just such an attack as happened thig moining, and she always had a pistol elthehr under her pillow or within easy reach. “About 3 o’clcci this morning her brother wag awakened by two shots, and hasten- ing to his sister’'s room found her dyin, on the floor. There was a bullet woun in the head. The burglar had scaled the orch posts and entered the window of iss Murphy’s room by breaking the glass. It is supposed that the nolse of the crashing glass awakened her, and as she jumped from the bed with her re- Se- volver in her hand the man fired. Marks | in the snow on the porch roof indicate that only one man entered the room, Miss Murphy usually kept the coliec- tlons for the Kingsley House fund in her room until, they reached a sum large enough to be placed in the bank, and it is thought the burglar was affer this money. ‘When the police raised Miss Murphy they found the revolver within a few inches of her right hand under the folds of her night dress. The falling of Miss Murphy's body Is thought to have scared the thief away before he had time to think about stealing anything. A careful investigation was made of the room and not a thing of any value was missing. Describes His Travels in Japan. Frun- cisco, SANTA CLAUS GIVES AWAY MANY USEFUL PRESENTS Sisters of the Holy Family Hold Their Annual Christmas Tree Festival. Santa Claus played a star engagement at the Alhambra Theater yesterday after- noon. His audience, which was com- posed of nearly a thousand children, ap- plauded his every movement and accepted the gifts from his generous hands with fervent thanks. The occasion was the annual Christmas tree festival for the children of the ay Homes and Sewing Schools, conducted by the Sisters of the Holy Family. The the- ater was never filled with a more content- ed and happy gathering, and every child who attends the scheols conducted by the Sisters was present. They ranged from 3 to 6 years of age, and all were neatiy and comfortably dressed. The brightest among them took part in the lengthy pro- gramme presented, and their efforts were eartily applauded by parents and friends. The programme opened with the singing of the “Adeste Fidelis” by the children. This was followed by a pretty address by Marguerite Gorman. A song of welcomo followed, and then the Daisies made their bow. Tiwenty little tots dressed in pink, with head coverings that resembled the flower they represented, sang a carol. The kindergarten boys made a sturdy appcar- ance as carpenters. They wore aprons, and every little fellow handled his ham- mer with the force of an honest work- man. given by the various classes, and audience showed its appreciation hearty applause. ed as the accompanist. The work of the children redounds to the credit of the Sis- ters of the Holy Family, who teach the! young charges many useful things. —_—— MAUD CHEYNEY SAYS SHE CANNOT IDENTIFY LETLIERS Alleged Wife of Mining Man Refuses to Acknowledge She Wrote Certain Missives. I will not swear that I wrote it, nor will I swear that I did not.” There are enough letters in the posses- sion of Cheyney to occupy the attention of thé court for several days more. On the opening of to-day's session of the United States Circuit Court, District Attorney Lewis F. Byington will move for the setting aside of the injunction of January 13, 1900, in the suit of Marle Paris vs. W. J. Biggy and others. The injunction restrains the Chief of Police from blockading Bacon place, the object of the police being to prevent persons visiting _the resorts in that blind alley. / Chief of Police Wittman inaugu- rated a similar blockade a few days ago, but withdrew it when informed by Roth- child & Ach of the existence of Judge Morrow’s injunction. The injunction was issued on the propo- sition that the police have no legal rignt to blockade a public street for such a purpose. S S L Postage on Christmas Edition.
