No better or more exciting sport could be desired than that which marked the opening of the Golden Gate race meeting | at Emeryville track yesterday. The asso- ciation caters to both the harness and running horse elements, and, strange to relate in this zection of the country, the 2:14 trot was the sallent feature of the entertainment. Seven subbornly contest- ed heats were necessary before the roan horse Dan W, driven by J. Albertson, was eventually returned winner. The attendance was surprisingly large, there being a big gallery, and the ring was crowded with speculators dressed in their best hetttng clothes. Thres regular books and a combination book had all the business they could attend to. Besides the trot four running events were de- cided, with the choices all bowled over. “Chief” Russell and “P{” Ruiz each pilot- ed a brace of winners. Unfortunately the programme was te~ diously drawn out, through no fault gf the management. Some of the horses were late in arriving from Sacramento, but this will be obviated to-day and the racing will begin promptly at 1 o'clock. Bookmaker Caesar Young lost the ser- vices of his consistent mare Good Hope in the Golden Gate handicap, at six fur- longs. She was a hot favorite, with Ransch up, and about three furlongs from home, wrile leading, was cut down. An examination showed the tendon complete- ly severed. Her racing days are over. An upset closed the session. “Butch” Fisher sent Helen Smith®to the barrier for the first time, and at odds of 15 to 1 the Trentola filly landed the merchandise. Russell let her slip to the front and she lasted just long enough to beat Mike Rice a half-len Jim McCleevy, the favor- ite, ran Summary.
