Bpeclal Dispatch to The Call. SEATTLE, Sept. 13.—The ravages of the epidemic of disease among the Indlans on the Lower Yukon last summer was awful. The mortality reported from Catholic mis- sions is greater than in any other pre- vious year. Old natives were chiefly the victims. Rev. Father Rene has just returned to Dawson from a trip to Nome and Teller. He says that thousands of Indians died fu the area spreading from Nulato down to St. Michael, southward to the KusKok- wim and northward toward Bering Strait. Many in the Lower Yukon basin were vic- tims. The epidemic was a sort of cholera that ran among the natives alone. Father Rene says it is belleved to have been brought over in some way from the Sibe- rian coast. The shortage of fish and other food among the natives did a great deal to spread the plague by rendering the In- dlans first impoverished as to strength and unable to withstand the disease. A very strange report is brought by Father Rene as to the origin of the In- dians of America. He says that it has beeen ascertained by the missionaries at Nulato and those in Arizona and New Mexico that the Indians of those two wide- 1y remote quarters speak the same identi- cal language. The report seems scarcely credible, but comes from the father direct as given him by priests under his charge at Nulato, who have mastered the Nulato language and who have been correspond- ing with the fathers among the Apaches. The headquarters of Father Rene are in Juneau. He will proceed from Dawson to Seattle to endeavor to raise funds for the establishment of a Catholic hospital in Nome. He established a Catholic church in Nome only a few weeks ago and left a priest in charge, and soon will have an assistant sent there. Minook Swept by Fire. VICTORIA, B. C., Sept. 13.—The steam- er Cottage City, which arrived here short- ly after midnight, brought news that the town of Little Minook, on the Lower Yu- kon, has been swept by fire and all the cabins and much valuable property de- stroyed.
