GEORGE R. FLETCHER. Manager. Frank A. and Jessle M. Pratt to L. G. Bur- PAID SERVICE - MAY BE FORGED Hook and Ladder Com- pany Resigns From the Fir?Depa.rtment. PR RS Beginning of the End of Volunteer Service in Alameda. ALAMEDA, Aug. 6.—The City Trustecs were astounded last night when they re- ceived a communication from Citizen Hook and Ladder Compary No. 1 an- nouncing its intention to withdraw from the volunteer fire department at the end of three months. As the company has always been the most active in the de- partment and the one organization that kept the volunteers together the City Trustees look upon this action as/the be- ginning of the end of the volunteer ser- vice. The communication from the com- pany, which was in the form of resolu- tions passed at its last meeting, follows: Whereas, We believe the city of Alameda has arrived at a period in wealth and importance when it is fully capable of providing for all departments of the municipal _service; and whereas, Citizen Hook and Ladder Company No, 1 has at all times kept up an active mem- bership arnd a full complement of members, never less than fitteen (15), which number is at present enrolled; and whereas, Citizen Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 has given a quar- ter of a century voluntary service to this city and its citizens, we believe that we should now retire In favor of a paid department. There- fore Resolved, That we, the members of Citizen Hook and’ Ladder Company No. 1, do hereby mutually agree to disband, and thereby close our services as volunteer firemen of the city of Alameda on the 3ist day of October, 1301, at 12 o'clock midnight. The City Trustees were surprised at the @ocument and even Chief Krauth did not know 1t was coming. President Forderer | said it meant that the city would sgon be compelled to organize a paid depart- ment, but he could not see where the money is coming from at present. The action of the hook and ladder com- pany leaves only four volunteer hose com- panies in the department. The hose wagons manned by these cempanies all have paid drivers and in case of their withdrawal there will be only one man to each. A hook and ladder company is ab- solutely necessary. The Citizen Hook and Ladder Com- pany was organized September 16, 1876. It has had among its members most of Ala- meda’s prominent citizens, including Judge John Ellsworth, Fritz Boehmer and the late John Leise. HOTEL ARRIVALS.
