AR Removes Stamps From Mili- tary Mail and Uses Them for His Own Profit. E. J. Turner, an extra clerk in the Ferry Postoffice, was arrested yesterday by Postoffice Inspector L. H. Bricker on charges of stealing stamps off mail mat- ter, sending newspapers unstamped to friends and for other criminal violations of postal laws. Inspector Bricker was apprised of the fact that for several weeks newspupers had been sent through the mails without stamps, Turner bewmg the last person througn whose hands the packages passed. A watch was set and Turner was caught yesterday with his pocket full of stamps that he had taken off mail pack- ages uncanceled. These stamps he In- tended to use, as he had used others, in sending packages of purchases he had made 1for peopie in the country. Turner admitted having taken the stamps that were found in his ockata and alleged that he was only “oshi “I did it only for a josh. See? Dat' all dere's to it.” Turner's appointment was not the re- sult of a civil service examination. He was appointed on the recommendation of Congressman Kahn as an extra clerk to handle the military mail, and it was this class of mail that suffered by his depre- dations. He was recelving a salary ot $75 per month—good pay for a young man of his caliber. @ sirleielirimieiieiei e @ | Francisco Bay. Published by officlal au- thority of the Superintendent.
