The demand for rallroad securities of all | general | Ehares and strens on talk of | grades has continued broad and active during The past week. The special feature of the weel has been the activity of the Stoeks of small railrpad companies, some-of which are not seen in the record of the Stock Exchange transactions for many weeks at a time. Thers can be no doubt that in many cases this buy- ing la in the interest of the large raliroad s\items, with a view to absorption or control. There are continued operations aiso looking to extension of community of interést among the larger raliroad kystems themselves. Buying m of speculative pools in the stocks where it was evident, and these pools have helped on the rise by manipulation and by exaggeration of current rumors regarding the properties. The occasional realizing of speculative profits has caused an irregular movement ‘0f prices. The prevalent tendency toward absorption of the minor rallroad systems has attracted spec- ulative pools to o] te in that class of stocks also and has made the public credulous of all rumors regarding consolidations, some of which prove unfounded. In Bome cases there is & contest against change of control and the com- titive bidding in the open market for the cating supply makes high prices. It is now a matter of history that efforts to obtain con- trol of St. Paul were frustrated by insiders and the price of that stock has not been main- ined at the high level reached during the ccmpetition, in spite of stock privileges and an increased dividend to stockholders. The | recent activity and strength in Burlington has given rise to the belief that other railroad interests were buying the stock and inside in- terests are said to havelextended their hold- | ings, With & view to keeping an independent control of the property. There has been a arge additional absorption of Baltimore and Ohio' in the iInterest of Pennsylvania, with view to the more parfect control of that prop- erty. Indications point to the progress of a pian for “consolidations among Southwestern rall- road properties and the public expression by the president of the Missourl Pacific of his ex- pectation of further mergers added to the belief. Of general _conditions large earnines reported have been & stren ening influence on raileoad stocks. This the been especially true of Southwestern railroads, any of which have enjoyed a double advance from last year's cotton market and the large wheat crop in their territory, compared with the shortage in the spring wheat region. The tidewater bituminous coal carriers have been | uniformly strong on account of notlce given of an increase of freight rates .on soft coal on April 1 and the large tracfic in anticipa: tion of the advance. The active iron mark of the stock merket, the ou rm of pigiron hav- ing risen to the figures of the recent boom period and consumption still running ahead The steel stocks themselves not responded to these conditions, have been dull and rather heavy. The cess of exchange of the old securities those -of the new corporation hes ham transattions in the s. The restricted overations on the m:rb in the new ‘:h'(&fl States eel Corporation stocks when issued are not regarded as sufficlently broad to fix the market status of those stocks and their sdmission to the Stock Exchange is awnited to give better opportunity for judgment. Opin- fons on the money outlock have been very conflicting, but the wnmaued low rate | for money has kept any apprehension over the foture quiet There has been a very active demand for rafiroad bonds during the 'eek_ Southwestern railway fssues and low- e speculative mort- gages have been most largely dealt in.
