SAN JOSE, March 7.—California dried | prunes are to be advertised throughout | the length and breadth of the country and | given the greatest exploitation ever given any kind of food stuffs. This is what the directors of the California Cured Fruit | Assoclation decided on last night. Thirty theusand dollars a month is to be expend- ed until further notice, or until the suc- | cess or failure of the scheme Is noted. H. E. Leson of the, Leson Advertising | lected as the advertising agent of the ! prune combine, signed a contract with the | assoclation to-day. The work of advertising and promoting the sale of prunes will commence at _once. The whole territory east of the Rocky Mr. Leson went to San Francisco to-day and will | open headquarters at the Palace Hotel, where he will surround himself with a score of writers, stenographers and art- ists. Advertising space in the press of the country will be used. Magazines, peri- odicals and all such publications will con- tain alluring advertisements of the food merits of prunes and recipes for cooking them in the various styles. In the large Eastern cities young ladies will be sta- tioned in stores to demonstrate the cook- ing of prunes. e full details have not yet been de- cided upon, but California prunes will be advertised and offered for sale in neat and attractive packages. It is expected that this will move the great prune crop of 1300 into the channel | of trade, and the outcome will be closely | watched by the growers. Several millions of pounds of the smaller sizes will be got rid of in by-products. The directors have set a price of $10 net per ton on these, with the guarantee that they will not find their way into the market. These sizes are under 120s, and 1t is said they will be converted into brandy. DEARTH OF FRUIT CARS. Serious Condition Confronts the Red- lands Orange Growers.
