FID THE BODY OF TRAIK ROBBER Remains of Channing B. Barnes Are Discovered at New Orleans. | Leader of the Gang That Held Up the Illinois Central Fast Mail Train Last Week. R NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 18. — Detec- | tives to-day found the body of one of the robbers who on last Thursday night held up, within the city limits of New Orleans, the Chicago thail train on the Illinois Cen- and escaped with a number of registered packages. The watch of Conductor Kin-| doubt of his jdentity as the leader of the | gang who held up the train. } Shortly after the hold-up on Thursday | pight Officers Daly and Lucich, while has- | tening to the scene discovered two men | carrying a bag and walking rapidly be- | tween the Illinois Central and Mississippl | Valley tracks. The officers halted the| men, but instead of surrendering they | began to shoo Both officers responded | and a lively fusillade followed. The men | drogped a United States mail | pouch and fled. Since then the detectives have been carefully examining the swamp | rear the city. To-day their search was rewardeg with tre finding of a body. Late to-day the dead robber was identified as | Channing B. Rarnes, alias John H. Nel- | son, alias Jack Nelson. He was wanted | for ‘holding up the Illinofs Centrai train near Wickiiffe, Ky., last July and robbing the safe of the American x{weu Com- pany. His brother, Charles W. Barnes, | and Richard Doyle were convicted for this latter robbery and both are serving sentences in the Kentucky State peniten- | tiar; When the attempt was made to! arrest Channing Barnes in St. Louis, he shot Chief Special Agent George Murray and es-aped When the body was discovered to-day, it was found that Barnes had cut his throat apd had evidently just died. His own watch and that of Conductor Kinna- brew were running. He had been wounded in the back and left wrist. Registered let- ters and dynamite were found on the| body. AUSTIN, Tex., Dec. 18.—Channing B. | Barnes, the train-robber whose dead | body is reported to have been found in a | swamp near New Orleans, was reared in | Austin. Hlis parents reside here, his| father, Charles W. Barnes, being a_gro- cer. The widow of the younger Chan- ning, who was formerly a_saleswoman in St. Louls, arrived here a few weeks ago and has since been stopping with her husband’'s parents. She was informed of the reported killing of her husbagd this evening, and seemsd not to be aRected. | She does not credit the report that the | dead body Is that of Channing. The| | train-robber's father was also unaffected | by the news of his son’s reported death. | He sald: “I believe it is all a fake gotten up by the detectives. It may be true, however, but I can't believe it. I don't think Channing has been near New| Orleans. 1 believe he is in Spain.” The father of Channing formerly held a prominent position with the Western | Union at Cincinnati. He came to Austin | many years ago. The son was well edu- | cated, and was given the best of religious | training by his parents. He was a wild | youth but was never accused of criminal acts until after he had left home. About fifteen years ago he served in the Cali-| fornia State penitentiary for a bold bank robbery, and after his release he went loi Mexico, where he remained for some | time. He next took up his residence in St. Louis, where he resided under the, guise of a commission merchant at the ! time he and his brother, Charles W. | Barnes, held up and robbed an Illinois fienfi train near Wickliffe, Ky., on July Chief t Y 3 o e B AT oo, T by Channing in St. Louis after the robl ry, spent several days here a few weeks ago in search of . who was believed at that time to be Austin. _If the remains of the dead rob- ber at New Orleans are positively iden- tified as those of Channing B. Barnes they will be brought here for interment. HANDS WERE TOO FULL OF DOUGH TO WRITE Novel Explanation of Alleged For- gery Offered by Defendant in Court. OAKLAND, Dec. 18—The fact that an applicant’s hands were covered with @Bugh is apparently ample excuse, offered in a forgery case, for the absence of a signatute. J. S. Barnes, on trial for col- lecting fees for bogus lications for life Insurance pollcics, testiled to-day in his own defense that the application in question was made out in J. S. Fuller's name at the request of his wife, who had the solfeiting agent sign it for her, as she was kneading bread at the time. Barnes also offered the testimony of E. Reudy, another agent, to the effect that the insurance companies are in the habit of accepting such applications. —_————— Civic Club Officers.
