COVELO, Aug. 7.—The tragic details of | a fatal affray between rival suftors at Bear Harbor, a coast hamlet, reached here by stage to-day. The principals in the aff are Mattie Jensen, David nd _Benjamin Smith. French's of Smith precipitated the quar- 1, and as a result French lies mortally wounded with four bullets in his body, while Smith is suffering from a serious fracture of the skull received from the iron bar in the hands of French. It appears both men were rival suitors for the hand of the young woman and had been devoted in their attentions. They were treated impartially and the affection of Miss Mattie was equally di- vided. Both voung men had proposed warriage, but Miss Jensen had been un- | able to choose between them. Both men had been regular callers at the Jensen house, though seldom if ever before both appeared in the parlor together. Sunday night last was Smith's visiting night, and he was enjoying the society of his sweet- heart when a sharp knock at the parlor door announced a caller. Smith opened the door and was confronted by French, who asked that he might speak with him a moment. Smith, not expecting any trouble, unhesitatingly complied. The mo- ment he crossed the exit French struck him a powerful blow with a heavy bar of iron. which prostrated him, and he fell through the door into the parlor in an almost insensible condition. Miss Jensen, when she noted the tide of affairs, ran into an adjoining room and procured a revolver and handed it to Smith to protect himself. Smith instantly grabbed the weapon and fired four shots at French, all taking effect in vital parts of the body. French is dying and Smith is under arrest.
