SRR The Auditor's clerks were kept busy vesterday reducing the amount of money estimated by the Board of Public Works to be necessary for the maintenance of its several departments during the next fis- cal year. In the one item of the estima- ted expenses of the Bureau of Engineer- ing an enormous increase has been dis- covered over the amount expended for the same work during the fiscal year of 1898 The_consolidation act provided that Engineer should receive $500 per ar and all fees, out of which he was to his deputies.’ The salaries of the lat- ter under Charies Tilton amounted to something over $18,000 for the year named. The office was_ self-sustaining, but cost the city $11 . It Is thought that the City Surveyor had over $5000 for himself after paying all the expenses of the office.
