Aie , that rinni: i5m R ot v OUR YEARS TC BE THE COURSE - N HIGH SCHOOL The Abolition of Extra Study Will Soon Bring About That Result. i e Board of Education Will Ultimately Adopt, Plan of Eight Years in Primary and Grammar Grades. ¥ R R The recent agitation of improvement clubs and individuals against the require- ment of extra study for pupils in the pub- lic schools will have its sequel at to-mor- row’'s meeting of the Board of Education, when Director Denman will introduce resolutions providing that the rules be changed so that no such study will be exacted in the primary grades, one-hal? hour in the fifth, sixth and seventh grades, one hour in the eighth grade and one and one-half hours in the ninth grade. It is the opinion of Superintendent Web- ster and other prominent educators that this plan is but a step in the direction of increasing the High School term from three to four years. They contend that the virtual abolition of extra study will have the effect of reducing the intellect- ual standard of the pupil who presents himself for admission to the High School, | or in other words, that the pupil will come to the High School illy prepared to undertake the curriculum of that institu- tion and as a consequence the term will have to be lengthened in order that suf- ficlent time may be afforded to acquire properly the various branches of the eourse. Chairman Mark, in discussing the pos- sibility of the High School term being in- creased, sald that the plan of Eastern cities yrovldln, or four years in the pri- mary grades, four years in the grammar and four years in the High School would in all likelfhcod be ultimately adopted by the board, but that the matter had not as | yet been considered officially or at any | great length. He was also of the opinion that the doing away with extra study would bring about that result, but how soon he could.not_tell. Superintendent Webster also realizes that the four-year High School term is almost an assured fact. While not op- posing such a contingency Mr. Webster says that the change cannot be made without a serious danger of “ovar‘rndlng or retrograding” the gunu:. as it wouls necessitate the possible introduction of the ninth grade i{n the High School, and the reconstruction of the primary and grammar grades. NO CARBON MONOXIDE FOUND IN THE BLOOD Sensational Story of an Evening Newspaper Exploded by the Use of the Solar Spectrum. Coroner Cole yesterday received the re- port of the city chemist in the matter of | his examination of the blood of Mrs. | | Christine Schuldt, to the effect that he had failed to find any traces of the toxic results of carbon monoxide and that Morgue Surgeon Leland’s report that death had ensued from natural causes was correct. Mrs. Schuldt was a widow, a domestic servant by occupation, and resided at 720 | | California. street. On the afternoon of | | | Washington's birthday she was found un- | conscious on the sidewalk at the intersec- { tion of Valencia and Twentieth streets | and was taken to the City Receiving Hos- pital, where she died shortly after. A | report was current and printed in one of the evening newspapers that she had been asphyxiated by inhaling illuminating gas | and that after she got on the street the carbon monoxide in her blood caused her to fall in a faint. There was no founda- tion for the story. e REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS. John J. Brady to David and Annie Cohen. |lot on § line of O'Farrell street, 175 W of Laguna, W §0 by S 120; $10.
