Great Interest has been aroused in the purchase by the Alameda Bvlr Company of a strip of land fifty feet Wide from the sugar works to tide water. Ia view of the announcement made by the Contra Costa Water Company that the latter would ship fuel to this point by water if such became possible, and, further, in view of the complaints of the .ui" nople to the effect that the rallroad en nmng all the profit for hauling their produci from the mill, it is believed here that the a:flu company I8 preparing to enter the rallway business on a small scale by mak- ing rall connections of their own with a water route to San Fran ‘The purchase of the strip of land men- tioned was made with the announced in- tention of making a sewer outlet to the bay; but the fact of the width of the strip, together with the dissatisfaction directed to the rallroad, has given rise to many conjectures, one of which, that seems most plausible, being that a way 1s to be constructed. Railroad rates have been advancing steadily, until now the sugar company claims that there is but little chance for it to compete with other concerns. They argue if they can reach the bay and then by water carry their product to San Francjsco they will be independent of the Southfrn Pacific Company. Moreover, it is ed that returning vessels could easily carry fuel for both the sugar com- Funy and the water company at much ower rates than are in effect now. A sav- ing could thus be made at both ends. Again, if such a line were opened most of the merchandise for local merchants would be shipped here by this new route. John Howard, president of the Ala- meda Bugar Company, when seen at his home on Vernon Heights to-night, was inclined to deny the rallway story and asserted that the strip of land was pur- chased solely for the purpose of a right of way for a Flge from the works to the water, b{l which to carry off the refuse water. owever, he was not Tone to discuss the subject or enter into etalls. Chief Lees says he has concluded to put a stap to expectorating on the sidewalks of this city. The frequent complaints recetved from citizens who complain that the mu- nicipal ordinance is not being enforced has led the head of the department to is- sue orders to Captains Spillane, Wittman and Gillen to notify the men to arrest any man they see using the sldewalks for a cuspidor. Captain Spillane’s lecture to his squad on the importance of eradicating the evil bore fruit last nl!h ‘when Officers Thom- as Murphy and J. C. Laws arrested J. Ramsper, a saloon keeper, and Fred Mul- 1§, an ironmolder, for the offense. Tt is the intention of the police to press the charge, In the hope that if an exam- ple is made of the two men further viola- tion of the ordinance will be stopped. e PAST PRESIDENTS.
