H. Glanniul, U. 8. A., when the report was made public that the young doctor had charge of the smallpox hospital and that he would personally look after the soldlers of the Forty-eighth Regl- ment that were stricken down with the dreaded and dangerous disease. Every- body that knew the physician or had ever met him readily recognized the fact that he had gone to his command- ing ot and with a keen sense of self-sucrifice had expressed the wish that he might have the detail to care for the sufferers and to act in the ca- pacity of physiclan till all danger was passed. This {s not the first time that Dr. Giannini has acted In a brave man- ner, A littls over two years ago, when Miller,an Inmate of the City and Coun- ty Hospital, was attacked with typhus fever, Dr. Glannin, at that time an In- terne of the hospital, volunteered to nurse the unfortunate man, His falth- ful work In this case almost cost the young physielan his life, as the long A. H. GIANNINL vigil in a draughty tent and overwork lald Glannin! low, and he was a long time recovering his former good health. When the League of the Cross camped at Santa Rosa last year Dr. Glannini acted as surgeon at the encampment, and he endeared himself in everybody's heart by the kind, gentle and consctentious way that he attended the cadets who responded to “sick call.” The young doctor has seen service at both the harbor and park hospitals, but shortly*after the war broke out resigned his position in the Board of Health department to accept a commission in the army. The many friends of Dr. Glannir! will wish for the best and hope that no harm will come from the young man's brave act, and feel assured ‘that this is another example that chivalry and knightly acts can still be found in this up- to-date nineteenth century. + 04040404 D40 40+ CHO 404040 4040404040 +0+0+ O+0+0 40+ of | SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST JUDGE TREADWELL IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS THREATENED. ©4+040+0 40404 0404+ 0040+ 010+ Or 0+0 +04 040 + 0+0+04 040 Ll s i © 4040404+ 040 404 04O 404040 404040 4040 4040+ O+0O40 4040 DR. There are thirty vessels regularly running as p senger carriers between New York and European ports that are over 5% feet in length, and there are also several freight steamers of great size. The tendenc ship-bullding is to produce larger v San Francisco, says Mr. Friedlander, will have to provide better facilities, larger wharve nd more of them, or commerce will not be held here.
