BUSINESS IS SUSPENDED —— EVERYBODY TURNED OUT TO FIGHT THE FLAMES. eV Power-Houss and Machinery Are Safe, but the Smelter Will Close Down Indefinitely Owing to Loss of Fuel. S i Speclal Dispatch to The Call. JEROME, Ariz., June 28.—The fire in the United Verde Copper Company’s works is still burning fiercely to-night. It is now confined to the large stores of coke, amounting to over a thousand tons. The company’s mine and other works have been shut down all day, every avail- able man fighting the fire to stay further progress and keep it under control. Ona end of the trestle in the railroad com- pany's yards caught fire and was par- | work it js as rapidly extinguished. It is budly damaged, but will probahly be saved from total destruction. The power- house and machinery are still safe, but stould a high wind arise nothing could prevent a most disastrous conflagration, s there is little or no water obtainable. The furniture, books and papers which were removed from the general ol building last night are being put be to-night. "So far no casualties have bee reported. Business was practically su: pended to-day. The fire in_the coke chu nay not be extinguished for many days. It will have to burn itself out, it s burning from underneath. Owing to the loss of coke and other damage the com- pany's smelter will close down indefi- nitely. There have been more disastrous fires here, but this is the first that has seriou ffected the copper company or deiayed work.
