STOCKTON, June 7.—Judge Budd to- day issued a writ of mandate requiring County Superintendent of Schools Wright to show cause why he should not pay over to the city $200 or thereabouts, alleged to be due on a proper apportionment of the school funds. The trouble is not of Mr. Wright's_making, but originated during George Goodell's administration of the office, he having decided that those pupils attending night and high schools were not entitled to enumeration in the census upon which the apportionment of State school funds was made; in other words, the Siate fund was intended for primary and gram- mar schools and must be apportioned to these schools upon a basis of the number of children of school age in the several BOORD'S (LONDON, ENGLAND) OLD TOM, DRY or SLOE CINS ARE THE BEST. districts. LAMBARDI — | Also a Valuable Tenor 1 in ““Lucia.” Al |A CREDITABLE PRODUCTION [ SiB st By Ashton Stevens. More surprises werg sprung by the Lambardi Opera Company last night in the good old opera of “Lucia.” First to be menticned is the young woman | programmed by the tantalizing name of enorita Italia V. Repetto. She sang the title part and her work was wonder- ful. Let this unknown senorita appear once as the understudy of Melba in this same part and her reputation is made the world over. She has the birdie | voice—thin, true, lithe and clear as gl in its superlative. In the “mad” | song she shamed an excellent flute, and | the audience fairly wallowed in ap- | plause. Miss Repetto is not beautiful to ’:. and she lacks Jamentably in those | qualities of personal spell and magne- | tism that play so great a part in the fate of an operatic artist, but she can sing Lucia as perhaps we have seldom | heard it sung before, except from Patti | and Melba, and her next appearance will be looked forward to with warm interest by all who heard her last | night. The other discovery was a tenor named Russo. He sang Edgardc as we | have not heard it sung in years. His | voice, like that of the Senorita Italia | V. Repetto’s, is not much in bulk; it is | Iyric to a degree, but clear, sure (bar a | few strained top notes), and capable at | times of urgent dramatic expression. | The orchestra was more at peace in | the simple Donizetti music, and the chorus, too, was happier than on the | opening night. Altogether the perform- | ance was extremely creditable. Al-| though but five singers came to the | front in the sextet, that famous old ! number was given out with stirring | effect. The ancient but seldom heard | opera of “Norma” is the bill for to-| night. ' wage the Saturday performances come To-night and mark the la Mrs. Riggs' new without a title. On Friday and Satur- ¥ nights the Kelcey-Shannon Com- | pany will fall back on “The Moth and the Flame,” a play that, while absurd | in its melodramatic features, is sur- passing in its comedy and satire. The | Henry Miller engagement, which will | probably be the most important of the | year, commences Monday in the Colum- ] bia with Henry Arthur Jones' new comedy, ““The Liar: matinee here of , which is still | Lewis Morrison, and the Alcazar playing “Hamlet” Florence Roberts | Company are stiil | at _the little cheater on O'Farrell street.
