A grand contest for first place honors is the card that the Califorfia Baseball League offers to the cranks this week. The Oakland dudes have fought their way up near the top just in time to meet their rivals on this side of the bay in a strug- gle for the leadership. Manager Harris has been sneering at the Oaklands of late and advising Cal Bwing to go and hire a few -men who | eould play ball, but when the dudes took | three straight games from Watsonville | by some exceptionally fine ball playing and settled down in second place the San Francisco magnate began to take a seri- ous view of the situation. If he succeeds in holding the lead after the coming en- gagement with the Oaklands he may con- sider himself very fortunate. he Oak- land team is now as good a fielding club as there is in the league, and it remains to be seen whether the dudes can wield the stick with suficient effectiveness to overcome the winning ways of the men in black and gold. The cranks on both sides of the bay are looking forward to the coming con- tests with more than usual interest, and there will probably be more flamboyant rooting at Recreation Park this week than has developed since the opening of the season. The line-up for to-morrow’s game is as follows: San Francisco, Oakland. Hammond -Russell \Right field.. Hildebrand mencement of the lacteal war. Since that unfortunate night fights, which are termed ‘‘scraps’’ by Sergeant Griffiths of the Seventeenth street po station, have been the order of the day and the night for that r ter. In order to ve the Coroner a trip over College Hill Captain Gillin has stationed three of his athletic men on duty at the Six-mile House. However, even the presence of these short-rib punchers have not been sufficient to quell the extractors of lacteal fluid and can cleaners. The war has now settled down between Joseph Regli and Martin Schorne. The former had the lat- ter arrested a few days ago for battering him on the head with an empty milk The cuts were drawn together by b o the surgeon’: needle at the City and County Hospital.
