REL The disabled steamer Elihu Thomson anchored two miles off Lighthouse Point, Santa Cruz, yesterday afternoon and will probably be towed in through the Golden Gate this morning. She was spoken by the steamer Santa Rosa yesterday at 1:30 4. m. and Captain Alexander offered to tow her into port, but Captain Whitney of the Elihu Thomson refused, saying he | chartered the steamer Rival and sent her @ z@ RO S S D S S S e sl e s e s A e e anadas TUGS RACING TO SECURE. As soon as the news brought by the Santa Rosa was made known the tug Fearless was at once sent out and an hour later she was followed by the Res- cue. The two tugs when last seen were going full speed and using every ounce of steam, so it should be an interesting race down the coast between them. The Fearless Is a new vessel and has never been fully tried, but she can be depended ugon to give a good account of herself. The Rescue is a very fast tug, and if the Fearless beats her down Captain Harry Marshall will know he has been in a race. The Elihu Thomson was on her way here from Honolulu with a cargo of su- gar. When several days out the shaft hroke and her propeller dropped to the bottom of the ocean. On April 30 the transport Senator came along and sup- lled the d|s¢ibled vessel with provisions, eslde‘! taking off twelve firemen and: oll- ers and one passenger. These were after- ward transferred to the steamer Austra- lia and brought to San Francisco. Later the Thomson was gpoken by the City of Peking, and Captain Smith offered to tow her into port, but Captaln Whitney re- fused, saying he was making about three knots an hour under sail and that he would reach San Francico all right. As soon as the news reached here the tug Relief was sent out to look for the disabled steamer. She was followed by the Rescue and later the underwriters @+ e out. The Rescue and Rival returned on account of the fog and heavy weather, but the Relief ke%t on and is_out yet. The underwriters then sent the Rival out again and Captain Perriman went along to direct the course of the vessel and to_assist Ca ;(aln Johnson. The Rival is still out and neither she nor the Relief wm return until their coal supply gives ln the meantime Captain Whitney kept the Elihu Thomson dodging along under canvas and has finally landed her at Santa Cruz. There is nearly $100,000 Xn. surance on the vessel and cargo, so by refusing the offer of assistance made him Captain Whitney has saved the under- writers a small fortune in salvaf A dispatch from’ Santa Cruz last night stated that the Thomson would start for this city at once in tow of a tug and would arrive to-day.
