The in- strument provided that if any woman claiming to be his widow should come forward and establish her claim In court she should take $l; also any woman | Claiming to be his daughter and estab- lishing the same should take but S1. These clauses set people to wondering, and certain ones feeling interested went to work to ascertain if Levy did leave a wife and daughter. Their efforts have now been rewarded, for it has been learned fhat Mrs. Lévy, the widow, re- sldes in Sydney, Australia, and she has sent a power of attorns~ to a friend in this city to look after her interests. The daughter, now married, resides in Ire- land, As a consequence the $:000 will be fought for, and Attorneys Snook & Church are preparing papers for a con- test. It is claimed that Levy's intentlons to | cut off his wife and daughter by will are thwarted by the California laws relating | to community property, and if the located | widow and daughter can prove their re- | lationship they will be entitied to a good- | Iy_portion of the wealth. It passed over the “sink.” Fifteen minutes later ninety feet of the roadbed went down out of sight, leaving the rails and ties suspended in space. A serious accl- dent to the Los Gatos train was only averted by the vigilance of the engineer, who stopped his engine just as the for- ward trucks rolled on the treacherous tracks. ""Hoodoo" last Sunday morning and immediately “sink” swallowed another stretch of newly made roadbed, and travel over line had to be suspended for nearly whole day. To-day the *“hoodoo” was put on the Alameda local line running within half a mile of the spot that has caused the rail- road people so much -trouble. The evil engine had barely completed its first trip this morning when a trackwalker, came into town on a run with the announcs ment that “the ‘sink’ has sunk again. Incoming trains were notified in time to prevent a disaster, The roadbed had dropped six or eight feet into the mire for a distance of nearly a hundred feet. The material devoured by the greedy sink was the same that was put in Sunday. A large gang of men was put to work repairing the damage. Crib- bing of heavy timbers was built under the suspended rails, and by noon time through trains were allowed to pass over the place. Roadmaster Baxter is having the “'sink™ filled with cinders. He argues that it is lighter material than has hither. to been used on the ‘“sink,” and conse- quently will not sink so readily. He advances no theory as to the repeat- ed disappearance of the roadhed, but the trainmen are firmly convinced that the “hoodoo” engine has something to do with it. 19 came back over the line the the the the HIPPING INTELLIGENCE.
