NEW YORK STOCK MARKET SW YORK, April 1.—Many advances were 1 on the stock murket to-day in very alings, the two hours nearly 630,000 wres changing hands. The Easter holidays 1 England rendered London no factor here, but the accumulation of a very large volume of purchasing- orders over the Good Friday holidays brought forth much higher qu tions at the opening. Subsequently heavy r izing caused a sharp setback to prices, but with the appears f the bank statement, which the specula ment viewed as more favorable than expected, was a material rally and the final prices were at or near the * best. The dealings were much influenced by : the buoyancy of Manhattan, which made a gain of 15 points, 9 of which it held. The statement by a lurge holder of Manhattan that be had been offered 16 per cent above Thrus- | day’s price for the stock was indicative that the Metropolitan Street Raflroad people sought control of the stock. The announcement that @ § per cent dividend per annum had been de- cided upon for Federal Steel with the first guprterly dividend payable in July brought fofth enormous purchases and a very wide opening, the extreme rise being over § points. Among the specialties, Third Avenue rose 10 points and there were advances of 1% to 43 points in American Tin Plate, People's Gas, American Steel, Union Paper and ~ Nattonal Steel, the latter recording the extreme gain. L% ASSOCIATED BANKS' STATEMENT. | NEW YORK, April 1.—The New York Finan- cler says: Operations with the. sub-treasury and the | consummation of several pending raflroad and | industrial transactiong which temporarily drew money from this center to the interior were re- sponsible for the loss of $3.8%6.000 In cash, as reported by the New York banks for the week \ding April 1. The reduction of $3,283,700 in | dwposits can be traced for the most part to this and while the deposit contraction lightened reserve labilities by 800,000, the surplus reserve, because of the cash loss, Is 42,062,575 tower than for the previous week. It has been expected, In view of the revival of the Stock Exchange activity, that loans would show & large gain, and the expansion of only 00 is very much less than had been pre- | dicted. The statement, owing to special com- plications that always appear during the April ettlement and for other reasons alluded to, cannot be Interpreted with any degree of accuracy. It is known, for instance, that there has been a quiet accumulation of sterling ex- change for some time past, In anticipation of the Spanish indemnity pa' ent, and this, while it does not show, may have had more or less to do in determining the character of the statement. | The gains and losses In totals are confined for the most part to a few of the larger bank The main fact which the exhibit sets forth | that the banks have rounded the usual spring period with a large avallable reserve. From | this time on gains, rather than losses, will be | the |t source, rule. It Is expected that money will be | flowing this way shortly and domestic ex- | change at various interior points Is now at | par or a premium, after having sold at a di count for some weeks. The rise of sterlin change to international parity y refic the preparations for the settlemen It is hoped to complete this payment by draw- ing against our balance abroad. If this can be done the banks here will gain to the full amount of the fund untll the Treasury calls | from it again. Indications point to easter | money from now on, but Philadelphia and other | cities report a_constant demand for commercial paper, that, if continued, will have an im- portant effect in_determining rates for the summer. Stock Exchange activity, however, which promises to exceed anything heretofore known, will be the main influence In this con- nection. . | ex- ts NEW YORK GRAIN AND PRODUCE. May opened %c to %c higher at from 73%c up to Tc, and rose quickly to 7i%c. In the mentime July, which opened at from 73%e to T3%c, had crawled up to Titge. The minimum temperature, however, changed |thfl course of the market and the indications were for continued unseascnable weather. The world’s shipments during the week were | extimated at about 8,000,000 bushels, or about 1,000,000 bushels in excess of the European re- | auirements. The Northwest recelpts and weak- ness of the New YOrk market were the chief | factors on the bear side of the market. The New | Moorpark, York weakness was interpreted as a reflection of the bearish fecling abroad. The market was | subject to many changes during the sesston, according as crop damage or present abund- ance predominated in the minds of speculators. The crop news was generally of a gloomy character, the exception being a report by the Modern Mlller, a St. Louls publication, which claimed “that ‘notwithstanding prevailing un- favorable news and backwardness of the seq- son there would be an average yleld of winter wheat. The circular of Scott & Magner says of Hay: “Recelpts of Hay on the San Francisco mar- ket for the past week have amounted to 2600 tons. Since the late rains farmers and holders of Hay generally have shown their anxiety to sell by rushing their Hay in here in excessive quantities dally. The accumulations that were held over from last week on account df the in- abllity to handle through the rains, added to this week's dally heavy arrivals, have broken the market badly. The arriv; this week have been more than double what the demand re- quires. Consumers and buyers generally do not want to load up. In the face of these heavy shipments many sacrifices have had to be made on prices to.effect sales. Shippers have been generally advised to hold off their shipments and allow the market to shape itself up. Thig advice apparently has been absolutely dis. regarded, and the result i a market swamped with Hay of all descriptions. If shippers wil allow the market a chance to straighten out and then ship moderately it would probably be better for all parties concerned.’ BRAN-—$16@18 per ton. MIDDLINGS—$1! 1 ton.
