10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 1899 NOTELECTED T0 REPRESENT RACETRACKS Repudiation of Burns’ Legislators. ALAMEDA IS INDIGNANT “DANBURNSVILLE” IS NOT ALL | THE COUNTY. Three of the Delegation Are Said to | Have Already Dug Their Political Graves. 24, 1893, he lald down his arms, “‘and re- sumed the peaceful pursuits of ordmarf\; life” at the Oakland race track, witi the bookmakers, the touts and the sure- thing gamblers who gather there as vul- tures do about a decaying corpse. figiis el CONFIDENCE HAS GONE FROM THE BURNS CAMP CALL HEADQUARTERS, SACRA- MENTO, Jan. 11.—The air of confidence which has been one of the principal feat- ures characterizing the Burns fight and fighters has gone. To-night the touts, the members of the Federal Brigade and the professional politicians who have been lined up here for ten days last past labor- ing for the colonel wore a very blue alr. The colonel himself received in the par- lors of the Golden Eagle and if anybody desired to converse with him on confiden- tial topics he was taken to a nearby room. The colonel is still firm in his de- termination not to be interviewed. He re- fuses to talk to representatives of the pre: Major McLaughlin was also non- communicative to-night. He denies that he stated that Burns was to recelve sev- enteen additional votes to-day. But the major did say last evening that within the next day or so Burns would receive an added strength of that number of votes. To-night the major says that he thinks Burns will have some more votes to-morrow, but declines to state just how many or where they are to come from. The other Burns lieutenants are also talk- ing about the %BJHS that the colonel will Oakland Office San Francisco Call, 908 Broadway, Jan. 11. Much dissatisfaction is bemg expressed that the representatives in the JSenate and Assembly whose districts incllide the race track should be voting for Dan Burns for United States Senator. Had it not been for the fact that the Municipal | League restricts itself solely to purely lo- | cal politics, these members would have ! been censured at last night's session. The | town of Emeryville, which is called, and | probably with a greater degree of truth than the average c izén aware of, “Dansburnsville,” is in the Senatorial dis- trict of Frank Leavitt and the Assembly | district of A. A. McKeen. | It is now being said that these two | men are representing no portion of their district but racing town and totally ires of the great majority s Emeryvilie. In the g sister somewhere about nine hundred names are credited to Em- eryville, and prior to election it was so | evident' that one-half of this enormous | registration was not above suspicion that the Army ar Republican League started a ona. For some rea- son or Lier was sed, and since that time Emeryville's vote has been regarded as somewhat doubtrul. It 18 conceded on all hands that not five | per cent of the voters of Alameda Coun- ty, outside of the two or three hundred who owe their very existence at the race track to Burns and his followers, are de- sirous of sending the colonel to the United States Senate. The other mblyman, Kelly, who voted for Burns, has also dug re, for although he rep- the city that is z L Burn: is essential nd althouwh there is among its honor Mr. a conservative | | Mr. | Shiras, in | The plaintiffs sought an injunction | English citizens who may engage in busi- | | ness here. make on the third ballot, but they decline to give any details or reasons for their prophecy. Frank P. Flint, United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, arrived to-night. He claims that he is for Bulla, but there are those who state that Flint’s real choice for Senator is Daniel M. Burns IOWA MAY TAX FOREIGN INSURANCE COMPANIES DUBUQUE, Iowa, Jan. I1lL—Judge the United States District Court, to-day rendered an opinion sus: taining the constitutionality of the Iowa law taxing foreign insurance comu:miesfii Te- straining the collection of a 314 per cent | tax levied under the new State law. They | attacked the law on the ground that it | was unconstitutional, with special refer- | ence to the section of the Federal consti- | tution prohibiting the enactment of legis- | lation that would abrogate treaty rights | of other countries. The plaintiffs, who are | citizens of England, claimed the treaty with the United States provided that no | special tax or restriction be levied against The questions raised in the | income tax case also were brought up. Judge Shiras decides In favor of the State of Iowa; holds that the point made by the plaintiffs regardlng the treaty s | weak, and declares the BState could go | farther and pass a law shutting them out entirely. Don’t Skip Me Beat a Fast Bunch of Sprinters—Sardonic Captured the Handicap—Ferrier Scored. The superb saddle work of ‘“‘Skeets” Martin was the one redeeming feature of the sport at Ingleside yesterday. Begin- ning with Ferrier in the first event, Mar- tin piloted five straight winners past the judges. He rode Red Glenn in the final number and finished last of the trio that started. All mounts looked alike to “‘Skeets Some were favorites and some were not. It was a hard day on favorite plavers. The golng was very juley, and but two of the pronounced choices managed to splash in front. The Presidio selling stake, worth $700 to the first horse, over one mlle and a fur- long, was the select plece of the after- noon. Seven started, and Pat Dunne's Survivor proved a handy winner over Ob- sidian. The two colts named were equal favorites in the betting. Martin, on Sur- vivor, soon had his mount in front, and at the wire finished two lengths in advance of the Burns & Waterhouse entry. Lava- tor was a fair third. The talent sent Castake to the post fa- vorite for the opening six furlong run. James B. McNally is to celebrate his silver jubilee as a priest to- = morrow. Twenty-five years ago Father McNally was ordained, and since that time he has served in several parishes, but has been in West Oakland longer than any other charge. His parishioners have arranged a programme of exerclses to fittingly celebrate the occasion. At 9 o'clock high mass will be cele- brated in St. Patrick’s Church, and in the evening the choir wiil have its pastor for its guest at a ban- quet in the new auditorium. The exerclses attending the banquet will be rendered by seventy of the young people of the church. Father McNally has long been recognized as one of the most broadminded theologians in Ala- meda County. He has never been backward In doing everything in his power to forward local im- provements and propositions tend- ing to benefit this city. In addition to his duties of the priesthood he is considerably interested in a model ranch which he owns away up in the Fruitvale Hills. This ranch is known on account of many experiments in agriculturs which Father McNally has made.
