POLICE SPECIALLY DETAILED FOUR ARRESTS MADE WITHIN THE PAST TEN DAYS. The Police Object to a Charge of Burglary Being Arbitrarily Reduced to Malicious Mischief. Complaints are belng made almost daily by storekeepers on Market street to the police of their showcases being broken About 1 o'clock yesterday morning a shoWcase at the entrance to the Baldwin clothing store was broken open and sev- eral pairs of gloves were stolen. The thief broke off the lock, evidently being afraid that breaking the glass might be heard. He was observed by Policemen C. Muphy and R. McDowell and they saw him making for the Emporium. They placed him under arrest and found the gloves on him. On November 10 a showcase in front of Maginn's furnishing store, 840 Market street, was smashed and a large number of ladies’ assorted neckties stolen. No- vember 11 a showcase at the entrance to the store of the J. M. Brunswick Billiard Supply Co. was broken and twenty ivory billiard balls were taken. In the early morning of November 6 a showcase in front of Paul Lot's photo- graph gallery was broken open and a gold watch case was stolen. Policemen Meyers and McNamara saw three boys running away from the gallery and they | pursued and captured them., A diamond which had evidently been used to cut the glass in the showcase was later found on the sidewalk In front of the gallery, and it was assumed that the thieves had thrown it away when they saw the two policemen. The cases were assigned to Judge Low's court, and at the preliminary examina- tion Monday the Judge, after hearing the evidence, decided that the charge of bur- glary cotld not stand and ordered that a charge of malicious mischief should be brought against the defendants. They were booked on that charge, and when the cases were called yesterday they were continued until to-day. The police are dissatisfied with the ac- tion of the Judge, and contend thatthe defendants were guilty of burglary or nothing. % >D33> 4 S Z 22 S e e >S50 < D274 SO S AMUSFMENTS.
