It's “Love's young dream"” in very truth, for Sallle has just turned one blissful summer and Joe has endured existence for a brief twenty months. INDICTMENTS ARE EXPECTED BARRINGTON AND WALLER ARE EXAMINED. Registrar Biggy to Be Complimented for Efficiency in a Special Report From That August Boedy. The Grand Jury met last evening to consider election cases and to probe into the financial affairs of the School Board. Subpoenas had been issued for Presi- dent Barrington of the Board of Educa. tion, Chairman Waller of the finance com- mitteg, Secretary Charles Welsh of the | School Board and Auditor Broderick. Welsh was present with a detailed state- ment of the finances of the board and other information bearing upon the ex- penditures. The Grand Jury has fully determined to make things hot for the School Board, believing that there has been gross de- reliction of duty and perhaps worse in the handling of the school funds. Espe- cial attention will be directed toward the bills for equipping Mission High School with furniture, apparatus, etc., the cost having been somewhere In the neighbor- hood of $40,000. President Barrington has refused to sign some of these bills. The fact has leaked out that thousands of doliars have been expended recently by the various committees without se- curing the consent of the board. The sup- ply committee has gmle ahead and equip- ped Mission High School on its own re- sponsibility, and is charged with gross extravagance, inasmuch as the School Board had no money to expend in the purchase of high-priced desks, laboratory equipment, etc. here is reason to believe that several indictments will result. The Grand Jury last night returned a cambric with soulful pale green trim- mings, and would fiing herself like a petu- lant child all in a heap upon the floor when any one attempted to take her from the wild man’s strong brown arms. Joe's undoing robbed him of his usual vivacity and even for a while his life was despaired of, when, llke a good fairy, civilization took a hand in his romance. Congo and Sallie and Joe came to town. Congo saw other members of the weaker sex and without any preparation for the shock he must have known he was about toinflict the missing link neglected Sallie. Joe, lucky Joe, took advantage of Congo’s desertion. . He gave Sallfe all his fruft, his largest, whitest grains of rice, and finally one bright morning took advantage of the chimpanzee’s unusual affection the virtues of Vin Mariani, which I Paris—41 Boulevard Haussmann. o™ PALACE *7§ SGRAND HOTELS? People’s Mutual Telephone Company Before the Supervisors’ Com-~ mittee Yesterday. The committes on streets of the Board | of Supervisors met yesterday morning and considered a number of important matters. The question of granting an ex- tension of one year's time to the People’s Mutual Telephone Company in which to expend $100,000 in betterments, as provided in the franchise, was disposed. of by re- quiring the company to file a written guarantee in the office of the Supervisors’ | clerk that there would be no more poles erected within the fire limits than are ab- solutely necessary for the conduct of the business. Afterward the committee on streets will favorably consider the appli-| | cation for one year’'s extension. Park Superintendent McLaren, The proposal was well received and the Meechamme “Association will b asked to give the committee some exact figures as to the cost of taking the sweepings to the park and all other desirable data. 1 decided to present a resolution pavements providing that the bitumen carts, but should not be sprinkled with should be thoroug It has by the flushing s: ha shown by trial in ern cities that flushing ~is_the best ay of cleaning lieves that uitumen should be treated in | the same way. The question of granting the Southern Pacific Railroad the right of way for a double track through the city to Fourth | | and Townsend streets was on the calen- for consideration, but was not aght-up for some reason. It will be recollected that this matter was before the committee several weeks ago and that the property owners in the Mission dis- trict filed a Strong protest, which was pre- sented by a large delegation of the citi- zens. They claim that the Southern Pa- cific is a trespasser now, that it built dar | {ts ome track on the plea 'that the same was only temporary and had since re- fused to vacate. —_———————— Lurline Salt Water Baths, Bush and Larkin sts.
