Correspondence of The Call. | HONOLULU, Oct. 12.—Private James ‘\i Wall, Company C, First New York, is_in the military hospital paralyzed | from head to feet and suffering from a severe concussion. He will recover, but after several weeks of careful nursing. | Yesterday he could not move a muscle |in his body; last night, however, he ;(‘Ould bend his fingers and talk. His | condition is due to a dive in shallow water at Waikiki, his head coming in | contact with a rock at the bottom. There were last night 130 patients in the military hospital. One is quite low of fever and may die. Malaria, rheu- matism and dysentery are the principal ailments. Homesickness does not help | matters any. The rheumatism patients are all from northern latitudes, which | is considered strange. There is more | malaria in the camps than was reason- ably to be expected. This is for the most part due to the habits of the men. Captain Tanner, U. S. N., has made draft on the Pubiic Works Office here for wharf and excavation plans so that he may call for bids for United States | water front work here upon his return io the coast. Much information was glven Captain Tanner by Superintend- ent Rowell. It is now certain that there will be no delay in establishing here a considerable naval station. In the case of Rose Berliner, who sued the City of Coluinbia for $5000 damages for false imprisonment, and whose case was thrown out of court by Judge Pe an appeal has been taken by her attc who sets up the 1g grounds: That the evidence was conclusive and establishes beyond qussnnn that the libelant was unlaw- and {improperly imprisoned, iu- d, assaulted and shamefully treat- ea by the master of the vessel; that the evidence does not sustaln the find fact of the trial court in favor o | respondent nor is there any justific tion or { the master or the respondents. ibelant therefore excepts to all findings of the court and to the de sion and decree entered. In the matter of licenses, about which so much controversy has been had of | late, to-da retail spirit license was issued , which, in addition to the usual prin matter, contained the following in red ink: “It is further conditioned that there shall be no screens nor other things obstructing the view of the inte- rior from passers-by, erected or main- t:luned at the entrance of the licensed place.” If this is all that is asked by the present Government it will not tronble of the saloons, and will not make saloon more attractive than iL is| already. On inquiry among the saloon keepers they say unanimously that they are willing to accept any fair re- strictions upon their traffic and that they feel that Messrs. Thurston and Hatch, who have both represented the former Hawalian Government at Wash- ington, will see that their cause is properly argued Justice W. F. Frear leaves for Wash- ington to attend sessions of the Ha- walian Commission before Congress as- sembles. He takeg away a huge mass of documentary evidence from the Gov- ernment departments. OUTSIDE COUNSEL IN J COUNTY LITIGATION | Supreme Court Deciaian That May | Deprive a Local Law Firm of a Big Fee. SAN RAFAEL, Oct. 19.—A question re- ng the legality of Boards of Super- loying outside counsel to con- | duct county litigation has been brought forward by Frank W. Taft, a well-known attorney of this city, in connection with the overpaid taxes due the various coun- ties from the State. A decision of the Supreme Court of the District Attorney er required by law to collect the sums the county from any source what- r. and this decision if applicable in he present instance will cause Rodgers, aterson & Slack, the well-known San : isco law firm, to lose a large sum ces.
