4 THE SA NCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1898 JOCKEY THORPE IN THE SADDLE Pilots Two Winners at Sacramento. FIVE FAVORITES IN FRONT RING ROUGHLY HANDLED BY THE BETTORS. Grady an Easy Victor in the Mile and Fifty Yards Race—idennessy Fined by the Judges for the: Same Old Offense. - Speciel Dispatch to The Call. 3 SACRAMENTO, Sept. 2&.—Racing at the park this afternoon received fresh im- petus by the reappearance in the saddle of the premier Western rider, Charley Thorpe. The “grand old man” rode with all of his old-time dash and vigor, and was heartily received by the crowd. Per- haps his effort on Shasta Water was not 2 most toothsome turf morsel, but he plloted Gold Fin and Bonnibel over the | bar safely, and bettors forgave the other. The ring laid liberal prices against the different starters, and as five straight hit the wire in front it quit'behind on the day’s booking. The sport.is aboye the average, and the management looks forward to an increased attendance the balance of the meeting. Thorpe donned his riding clothes for the first time since his return here, and sat astride Gold Fin, the 7 to 10 favorite in the opening event for two-year-olds. dodgers at his mercy and shut them out. Attendance 3500. Score: Club— Brooklyn Pittsburg” Batteries—Kennedy and Grim: Cronin and Bowerman. Umpires—Connolly and Hunt. NEW YORK, Sept. 20.—The Giants had the game well In hand up to the seventh inning, when six singles and a bad throw by Davis let in four runs. Davis got confused in the eighth, allowing Taylor's hit to drop safe and this run could not be overcome by the New Yorks. Good batting was responsible for the New Yorks' runs. Doheny’s homer sent two men in, in front of him. Attendance 500. Score: 0 ‘arner; Sugden. Umpires—Swartwood and Warner. Called’ on account of derkness. - — SUICIDE OF A WIFE-BEATER. Jack Wilson Takes a Dose of Mor- phine at Monson. VISALIA, Sept. 20.—Jack Wilson, who has been twice arrested and convicted of wife-beating, committed sulcide by taking morvhine at Monson Saturday. ‘Wilson had evidently made full prepara- tion for committing suicide, as he had dressed himself in a new suit of clothes and placed a new pair of shoes beside the bed. On the porch was found a bottle coniaining a small quantity of morphine. On the 9th of this month he was re- leased from the Fresno County Jail and it is presumed that remorse for his dis- solute ways so preyed on his mind that he determined to end his troubles and his life by committing suicide. He was a native of England, 46 years of age. T el TO' FIGHT SCALE BUGS. Scheme of Southern California Horti- culturists. LOS 'ANGELES, Sept. 2.—The South- ern California Horticultural Board has been organized with representatives from five counties for the purpose of Y eans to get rid of the purple OGP TE staie ‘Dugs “Which are beginning to infest the trees. An agent will be sent to Hawall and China to secure a arasite which feeds on these pests. The guper\ isors of the several countles will be asked to bear the expense of the trip. PROSPERITY'S ERA ON THE RANGES All Kinds of Stock in Demand. COMPETITION AMONG BUYERS BIG EASTERN FIRMS ENTER THE FIELD. Fair Prices the Rule in the Cattle Districts of Northern California and Southezstern Oregon. Special Dispatch to The Call REDDING, Sept. 20.—Never until the present season has there been such a thorough cleaning up of marketable stock on the great cattle runs of North- ern California, Southeastern Oregon and portions of Nevada. Only within the past few years have Eastern buy- ers figured as an important factor in the stock transactions of these sec- tions. To-day the buying agents of the great packing houses of Chicago, St. Paul, Omaha, and Kansas City are ab- solute masters of the situation. They fix the prices and secure the choice of the ranges. Owing to shortages in the Eastern supply this year the necessities of the packing interests compelled the buy- €rs to scour the most remote stock re- gions in search of beef and mutton, ‘and. territory that has hitherto been considered ‘as properly belonging ‘to San Francisco has not been free from invasion. Prices have consequently been stiffened, greatly to the advantage of stockmen. Money is now plentiful in stock centers and all over the ranges, not altogether because of enhanced values, but more on account of the vol- ume of sales effected For the San Francisco market most of the cattle secured in extreme North- ern California and Southeastern. Ore- gon is shipped from Siskiyou County points. Edson - rothers are steady ship- pers. from :Grc_elle. The drought in Southern California enabled them' to buy in San Luis Obispo 1000 head of starving cattle. They also bought up several large bunches of cattle on the Catalina Islands. This stock was shipped by rail to Gazelle and turned out on the well-watered Siskiyou ranges. These bargains enabled them to turn off every marketable hoof on their runs and yet have ample stock for the succeeding season. From Ager, Hornbrook and Montague are shipped all of the stock bought in Southeastern Oregon for the San Fran- cisco market. From one to five special stock trains a week pass through this city en route to Sacramento and San Francisco. Considerable stock is also shipped from Cottonwood and Red Bluff. In Modoc County Eastern buyers ship cattle and sheep to the packing houses by way of Reno and the Central route. Within the past week a bunch of 500 beeves brought $24 50 each all round on the range. This was in Big Valley. On Butte Creek sales have been made lately for $25 a head on the range. A domestic buyer at Adin secured a bunch of 450 prime beeves at 4 to 5% cents. A recent report from Modoc and Las- sen counties says that stockmen have sold more cattle and sheep this year than for seven years past, and from bresent indications there are enough buyers in; the field to handle every mar- ketable hoof in both counties. Not only are the .regular foreign buyers taking all they can contract for in the way of beef and mutton, but local men ATTACKED BY AN ENRAGED BUCK A Thrilling Combat on Bolinas Ridge. MAN AND HORSE IN PERIL GORED BY A MONARCH OF THE v GLEN. Peculiar Circumstances of the En- counter and Lucky Stroke That Turned the Tide of Battle. Speclal Dispatch.to The Call. SAN RAFAEL, Sept. 20.—Albert Say- ers, proprietor of the San Rafael and Bolinas stage line, had an encounter with an enraged deer last evening that almost resulted in the loss of his life. most peculiar.
