THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, MAY 14, 1898. TORPEDO WA LOADED WELL Won the Opening Rae at Oakland at Odds of 100 to 1. Red Bird, Another 100 to Shot, Finished a Close Second. Three Favorites Met With Defeat Ashley Landed Cleverly. Flandes Took a Purse. Lady The opening race at Oakland yesterday ites yesterday, and but one of them—Mal- lakwa—managed to get to the wire in front. The Montana turfman sent a big commission Into the ring on the latter. Martillo opened up favorite for the maiden two-year-old event, but receded in the betting and ran a most disappoint- ing race. The winner, Mallakwa, on his showing was well worth the support ac- corded him. “Daggie” Smith, the owner of Torpedo, a1d not think very highly of the gelding’s chances, and bet but $10 on him to show, getting 15 to 1. The finish for the place between San Mateo and Elsmore In the fourth race was a very close thing, and could have been given to either horse without causing any great amount of dissension. San Venado will do to have a bet. on next time he starts. The colt was started “short” yesterday, which, no doubt, ac- counted for the accommodating manners of some of the layers of odds. He ran under restraint to the head of the stretch | and then “Dblew up.” One fortunate speculator from the San | Francisco side managed to string $5 three | ways on Torpedo, and created quite a sen- sation when cashing his tickets, the wise ones looking on him as a, freak of nature. Jockey Dick Clawson seems to be the one to follow these days. Dick was again on top yesterday with three winners. Pig- ot rode In hard luck, getting past the Wire in front but once. e 1 TO-DAY'S ENTRIES.
