ALEXANDER McADIE, Local Forecast Officlal. EASTERN MARKETS. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. NEW YORK, April 5—To-day's stock market was almost stagnant, and there were minutes at a time during the session of the Exchange when no quotation for any stock was recorded. Small as the total of business was, most of it was made up of transactions in a few of the leading stocks, Sugar and the Grangers absorbing the largest proportion. The dullness ‘itself was expressive of the pre- vailing sentiment of waiting and of extreme doubt. Not only were reports very conflicting as to what would be the tenor of the Presi- dent’s message to Congress, but opinions as to how the message would be received and di posed of differed widely. There was practi- cally nothing left of yesterday's sanguine an- ticipations that @ sentiment was growing In Washington against warlike measures, There were, in fact, significant reports that the organized pressure which has been exerted on Congress during the' last few davs against hostile measures has rather defeated its pur- pose of awakening resentment. Wall street counted much on the effect of these united representations Lo Congress. Prices show bags, including April, $575; May, $ 70@6 10.
