SUIGIDE SIMS™ HOTHER She Writes to Chief of Police Lees About Her Dead Boy. He Was a Maniac and Wantonly ! Murdered His Eighteen-Year- 0ld Wife. Chief of Police Lees received yesterday ;aletter from Mzry L. Sims at Caldwell, N. C., the mother of Joun W. Sims, who committed suicide on the 6:h of the pres- ent month by shooting himself in the head in 8 Third-strest saloon. Mrs. Sims bad read the account in THE CALL of the suicide and wrote for furtner particulars garding the name and identity of the dead man. Whnen Sims killed himself he left a note <tating that he murdered his wife on June 28, 1895, in North Carolina and that he bad escaped from un insane asylum in t at State. The letter written by his mother and a ippin - indorsed from the Charlotte (N. ) Observer corroborate the story as told by the suicide and his mother. The Ob- server says that on June 25, 1895, Sims wa- working in a cotion-field at nis nome near Caldwell station, N. C., when he was taunted by rome boys passing along. De- coming infuriated be drew a revoiver and tired, the bullet siriking a boy named Will'A exander in the mouth. Believing tnat he bad killed Alexander, the shooter b came desperate and, revolver 1n hand, ran at full speed toward his house. His wite, 18 years old and only five months married, saw him comiag, and, divining his purpose, attempted 1o escape to the hou-e of a neighbor. He overiook her, and, de«pits her pathetic pleadings, piaced the muzze of the revoiver to her head, and sent the bullet crashing through her brain. He was tried for murder, declared in- sane, and in September of the same vear commitied to the Siate Ho-pital ai Mor- zanton. On the 27th of iasi June he es- caved, #nd nothing more was heard of bim until bis suicide. Sims’ mother s'ates in her letier that the suic'de was her only son, that he had oeen tryins for several years to take his life, and that he had been a vreat burden on her since he wa- 13 yearsold. Raish, contractor, charged with stealing and saltering a public record from the office of the Superintendent of Streets, appeared before Judwe Low yesterday afterncon. Fifty bright, well-dressed and happy little tots enjoyed themselves yesterday afternoon at the corner of Twenty-fifth and Vicksburg streeis. These innocent little native sons and daughters are the pupils of Miss Marguer:te Collymore, who has charge of the private kindergarten school at this place. This teacher has had charge of the school for the pust three years, and o popuiar is she not only with the parents ot her pupiis bat with the residents of the valley, that the school- house was jaramed with the ladies of the neighborhood, who came in appreciation of her care and painstaking with the littie tots who attend her school. Tie opening exercise consisted of a Christmas song and short recitations by the older pupils of t(he clase. Aiter this came a liberal distribution of Caristmas presents, the gifts of the storekeepers in the vicinity. Each child received two or more presents with a box of candy thrown in. It would be needless to add that the little ones went home happy and cheer- ful, with many good wisies for their teacher. e The French Library.
