NFW YORE. Dec. 8.—To-day’s stock market opened this morning with a tremendous show of animation and vigorous upward tendency, gains being uniform pretty much through the list. It was evident that the sirength dispiayed by the market yesterday had brought orders to the com- mwission house Lo buy stocks. There was aiso buy- ing for London account for the first time in several days, the advance in prices here apparently fail- 1ng to tempt arbitrage brokers to sell. Their pur- chases of St Paul were on quite a large scale and also bought Union Pacific, but there were sules of Louisville and Atcuison for Lonuon se- count. Sugar was the one exception in the strength of the market a: the opening, but lis loss soon widened and heavy liquidation in the stock set i, offerings beiug very neavy and active support be: ing of no avail te recover lis losses. Y esierday’s rumor of anextra dividend was thorouchly ais- credited this morning and yesierday’s gain was consequently completely wiped out tefore the an- noun ement ot the regular dividend. The stock was very feverish all day and fluciuated widely and frequently, but worked coustantiy toward & lower level and closed near the lowest, with & net loss of 435 Total saies were 120,000 susres. Consolldated Gas was also a mark {or the Feac- tonists and dropped at one time 415 points. The (0 isequence was Lhat Lhe market was kept unsettied all day. When the general advance came to a stop duliness intervened ana there were fre- quent rallies. karly in the fiinal hour prices of many siocks were at the best, but the final drop in sugar again weacened prices all around and lefi net gains confined to fractions in almos: ull cases and a fair sprinkling of losses all through the list. Union Pacific was heavy on account of the steps taken by the Government Lo quality as a bidder at tue Kausas Pacifi- sale. ‘Ihe activity displayed by the bond market was qui e remarkable for tue first hour, approaching $1,750.000 in par value, and, it 1s smid, breaking the record for one hour's business. ‘ihere vwas some decrease iu aciivity earlier in the day, but the ton- coutinued strong and the prices of a number of bouds of the middle grade moved up from one to several points. Some 0f the high-craie bonds showed heavy gains. In the former case the tone was entirely due o New York support. There was & gool feeling bere but little action. So apathetic are dealers that Secretary Gage's currency plans had lit le effect. Of course il is felt that 1f this scheme for an issue of 2 per cent bonds repayable, principal aud inierest, in £old coin is carried through & great strid - will be made toward currency reform. Prices closed at the best. Bouthern Railway preferred was especially good. Grand Trunks were booming, aud all descripiions of Canacian securities, including Hudson Bay shares, were good. The chlef incentive to buy came from the further decresse iu ihe deliveries in the Northwest, and though otber bullish news came in during the day this proved the main sus- tainlog factor throughout. For the first time shorts in December showed real anxiety. Decem- ber opened at 99¢, or 3, above yesierday's ciose. Alittle selitng by the bull ciique sufticed to put the price back to 95%4c, but an hour later an at- tempt 1o buy & few lots put the price to $1 very quickly. The interest iu the option did not then die out as it ald yesterday. More bnying oraers came in after a silght reaction which put the price to $1 U1 Again the bull crowd let go, but for the rest of the day Lecember showed an affection for the doll.r mark. BOSTON WOOL MARKET. BOSTOY, Dec. 8.—The American Wool and Co.- ton Reporter will say of the wool market: On the whole the marker has oot besn So lifeless for months. It is generally admitted, however, that the mills are grinding up the raw ma:erial vers fasi. All things consid-red the actual amount must be pretty nearly if uot quite at the rate of 600,000,000 pourds per year. ~uch & showing affords great encouragement to the wool trade. and the predictions are still rife tbat the prices Will Dot jong hence be fully on & level with thos* of Octover 1 It Is Increas ingly difficuit to speak of actual prices fo this market: the quotations are un- changed, and while an intensely ¢uil market a'ways Telies the presumption of coucessions, it would be difficull 10 put on’s finger on actual markdo \ns at this time. As & matier of fact there is vardly buyers enough around to break toe market. Thers has been a big falling off in the sale of Australian, OWIng Lo the fact that, while there are a number of persons who would' be glaa to pick up rouna amounts, the holders are no: auXious to seil at prices p-eviously quoted.
