Itis not a sure thing that the United States steamer Marion will go to San Di- ego aiter all the talk that tire ship would be sént to that port. U.S. Grant tele- graphed from this city to the San Diego people that Governor Budd had agreed to make the assignment of the ship in ac- cordance with the desires of the Secretary of the Navy and the wishes of the San Diego public. Itis now reported that the Governor's promise was not positive, but was condi- tioned on the ability of San Diego to care for the vessel. Mr. Grant fancied that General James’ estimate of §400 a month asa sum necessary to maintain ihe ship in good order was in excess of the amount actually required for that purpose. As there seemed opinion on this subject, the anthorities at Mare Island Navy-yard were asked to make an estimate, and they did re- They figured that the sarion’s maintenance would cost $400 a month. General Barrett hasnot yet executed the order of the Governor in this respect, and Lieutenant Hughes has not been able to get permission of the Navy Dspart- 1aent to make the trip. Governor Budd is, therefore, without offic al intelligence in the matter. The San Diego resarve- men say thatall the money needed can be raised by the progressive peopie of that town. The San Franeisco reservemen, on the other hand, aver chat the members ot the San Diego division do not know what they are talkinr about. Itisadmitted that the money migat be raised for a few months, but it 18 contended that the amount would not ve forthcom:ng for every month of the next two years, The Governor is nct in a dilemma on this propo-ition, but he is between the devil and the deep ses.
