5 | 2 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2 . 1897, DAME ROMOR CALLED DOWN Firm Denial That Rev. Mr. Williams Would Be Trinity’s Pastor. Another Reason Why Rev. George E. Walk Resigned Given at Last. He Objected to Flashlight Photogra- phy During a Funeral Ceremony and Trouble Resulted. Dame Rumor has been at work again, and this tme the frisky old girl hasa nice little morsel to dish up for the bene- fit of the church-going part of the popus lace. As usual, the news is vigorously denied by everybody that is supposed to know the least thing a2bout it. X The rumor is to the effvct that Rev. W. D. Williams is alter the pastorate of Trinity Episcopal Church, left vacaut by tie resignation of Rev. George E. Walk. The Rev. Mr. Williams, it will be remem- bered, was the former pastor of Plymouth Congregational Church in this city, but about seven months ago resigned his charge for the reason that his investiga~ tionsconvinced him that he was'in error— that the real place for him was the fold of the Episcopacv. Accordingly he pro- fessed that faitn, and a sbort time after- ward was asked to sccept a temporary pastorate in Oregon City, where he is now located. About six weeks ago a ‘membsr of his former flock died in Calaveras Coupty and Dr. Williams was sent ior 1o preach. ths funeral sermon. He complied, but re- tursed immediately 10 Oregon : City. Shortv after this occurrence'a Tumor was set afloat that tie reverend gentieman would like a pastorate at Trinity Church, and bere lately it wasstrengthened to the exient that his friends were working vigor- ously to secure it for him. - This, however, 1s emphatically denied, on the ground that Dr. Williams has been a professor of the faith too shori & time to fill the pulpit of an edifice where the ‘at- mosphere is s0 charged with that odor of dignity incident to wealth and long foun- dation. It is asserted, furithermere, that Dr. Williams has no thought of a.Trinity | Church pastorate, nor have any of the members signifiea their desire to see him installed as pastor, and that he will leuve Oregon City abour the latter part o the month for New York City. Another reascn why Rev. Dr. Walk ‘re- signed as minister has now coiue to iight; as such things usuaily do with the fupse of ume. T facts show tnat the trou- bie originated at the time of the funéral of the celebrated female autnor, Kate Field. It seems that local friends -of the de- ceased writer had made arraxgements. to have the scene atv the. funeral photd- graphea, though Dr. Walk knew hothing of any of there pians, During the cere- mony a flashiight photograph was taken. and then came the irouble that resuited in the pastor’s resignation and so much talk; 1be natural consequence ot which was con- s.derable bitternesa. Immediately after the. ceremony: Dr. ‘Walk besoke bis resentnient in no uncer- tain terms at what had been done. I believe,” he said, *‘that such pros ceedings are a disgrace to this sacred edi- fice. The idea of having an explosion and then the air filled with smoke during the progress of a funerai is something that 1o my mind ought never to be permitted - in a structure sanctified to the worshin of God. 1i I had known ot it beforehand it should never bave occurred.’” Several of the members éxpressed “their tion that ihe pastor should hold such an opinion, and those that had made arrangements for the photographing 100k the preacher’s words as a dilect affront. | A conference wax held with bim- and he adbered to what he had said, if anytuing growing more emphstic 1h b s laneunge. This cansed so much trouble that thie Rev. George E. Walk resigned his position and started in searen of vastiires lew, FATORS TEE MISSION Z00, The Commission Makes Its Report and Suggests Procedure. Johin MeLaren, superintendent of Gold- en Gats Perk, and Edward Deady, head gardener of tue City Hall, who were ap- pointed by the Board of Supervisors to pass on a suitable site for the Mission zoo, have made areport, which is, in substance, as follows: The result of our examination leads us to the conclusion that the tract most desirable for the purposes named skould be made up in part from the properties submitted by Messrs. Baldwin & Howell, together with several adja- cent tracts, which have apparentiy not been presented (0 your honorable board. With the tracts offired by Baidwin & Howell, being about 153 scres, there shonid be pur: chased or condemncd it addition the follow: ng: Tract 6, owned by Johu Pforr, consisting of ‘abouteight acres; ulso several lots on the west side of Diamotd strect gt its - juncion with Cherry street, about 250 by 75 feet, and tract 7, owned by B. Joost, seven or éight Bcies. Our reason for recommending the purchase of the Joost tract is that it contains several grand groups of rocks that will be a great na- gition 1o the picturesque sppearance of the whole, as weil as giving en outlet from the purposed park at its northerly end. Our rea- son for ndding the John Piorrtract and the stripon Diamond streetis to give the neces Eary froniage to the purposed tract -on the county roaa and as giviag & proper and digni- fled approach to the park, " The report also recommends the widening of streets and the construction of tunmnels 1o give pood approaches to the 700, and the building of a roadway through the park to connect with the Corbett road. The remainder of the report is devoted to an explanation of why the tract de- scribed was chosen in preference to others | giving l'henatural advantages that would be considered in laying out a zaologncal: garden. DESPONDENCY THE CAUSE. An Unemployed Waiter Shoots Himself in Golden Gate Park. Despondent over his failure to procure employment Edmund Kaeppel, a waiter, Tuesday night attempted to commit sui- cide in Golden Gate Park by shooting bimself in the left breast. He was giscovered by a park policeman, wbhbo had him removed to the Receiving Hospital. An examination disclosed that thebuliet had entered below the breast and lodged in the muscles-of the back, It for the purpose, after which, with the indorse- mentof the union, which 'they expect to re- ceive. the commitiee will be prepared to go ahead, 1n co-operation with other orgeniza- tions having the same ends in view, in the en- deavor to secure the enforcement of existin Iaws for the suppression of vice and crime an the énactment of such others as may be nece: sary for the purpose. WITH MILITARY HONORS. The Boys’ Brigade’s Fareweil to Their Dead Leader, President C. J. Smith, With impressive military rites Company T, Fifth Regiment of the Boys’ Brigade of California, laid the remains of their beloved leader, President C. J. Smith, to restin Cypress Lawn Cemetery yesterday. Mr. Smith nad been sick but ten days, his trouble being typhoid pneumonia, contracted through the sacrifice of selfin an effort to promote the best interests of his young charges. At an early hour vesterday morning Company F. 100 strong, in command of Captain G. W. 8. Pringle, formed in front af the Smith home in Alameda, and later with muffi=d drums escorted the body of their leader to the ferty, connecting with the 9 A. M. -boat for San Francisco, the funeral services being conducted atthe Howard - street Methodist - Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Smith was an hon- ored member. Pastor John A. B. Wilson was assisted by Presiding Elder Case and a great choruschoir. Robert Smith sang “Some Time We’ll Understand,” and *“The Home of the Soul"* was sweetly rendered by Miss Hermonie Lask. Eulogies were vronounced by both Dr. Case and Dr. Wilson, The final services were held at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, sttended by nundreds of sorrowing friends, conveyed thither by special train provided by Superintendent Vining of the Market-street Railway Sys- tem, Mr. Smith having for years been his confidential man at the railway head- quariers. Tue services at the grave were mnst im- pressive. A the lastshovelful of earth fell upon the cssket Company F fired toree vollevs from their ‘muskets and Bueler Fred Gillman sounded *‘taps.” Memorial seivices were hed last night at the Howar ‘-streat Church. 1 NEW COURSING PARK ' Wealthy Sportsmen Are Figur- ing on a Site Near the Ingleside Racetrack.
