E. NO BOTS 'AS FIREMEN. The District Eneineers Ordered to Employ Only Able- Bodied Men, Already a Large Number of Youths Have Been Discharged From the Force. Chief Sullivan a few days ago ordered all the district engineers in the Fire Da- partment to investigate the men employed in the various fire-houses in their districts and if any minors were discovered to 1m- mediately dismiss them. Nearly every district engineer in the city found minors acting as either extra- men or substitutes to exiramen. Some weeks ago THE CaLu exposed the fact that minors were acting as firemen on Trucs 7 on Fol:om street, and whben the matter was investigated by En- gineer McKittrick of the district, he discharged six minors who hac been do- ing duty h the company. One of the engineers said : *‘Immediately after the publication of the arucle in THE CALL to the effect that minors were being employed in the department, the en- to mvestigate their men for the presence of minors. Nearly all of the engineers found minors and discharged them.’” Under the new order it is impossible for a minor to get into the depsrtment. When a man desires to act as substitute for a fireman be must go before the Dis- trict Engineer of the district, who passes upon him. 1f the engineer is doubtful as to the man’s a e he is compelled to inves- tigate, and 1f the applicant comes up to the rcqunemnnls he s admitted to tue ser- vice. 1t is very hard to get men to act as sub- stitutes af the rate of $10 a month, How- ever, it will be now impossible for a minor to gain an appointment in the service. - His Atteutions Were Annoying. 1 Ohigashi, a Japanese, who was arrested r diswrbing the peace of Miss Goertz Hain, who lives on Twenty-fourth street, near Potrero avenue, wus disc yesterday by ihe Commi iers of Ius.
