8 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1897. TORKEYS WON AT SCHUETIEN German Organizations Hold Their Annual Shooting Festival. San Francisco Turners and the California Club Strive for Medals. The Crack of Rifles on the San Rafael Range Continues Through- out the Day. An air of Thanksgiving prevailed at the range at Schuetzen Park, near San Rafael terday, for, besides the regular month! bullseye shoots of tbe Cali- ves meda! and fornia Schuetzen Club and other organiza- | tions, the great turkev-shoot of the season was held and the crack of the rifles was incessant, while the victorious shouts of the marksmen were loud and frequent. Despite the stuffy odor of burned powder, which was at times almost un- bearable, the enthusiasm ran high and the number of ladies who were present watched the contest with interest through- out the day. There were turkey-raffies in every part of the grounds and the bowling-alley vroved a bonanza for the experts. win a turkey it was necessary to make thirty-two points in four trials, and this score was toppled frequently throughout the dav. Fred Schuemann’s annual turkey shoot attracted a large crowd and ten, tw:ive and fourteen pound turkeys changed own- ership with a rapidity that was aston- ishing. But while the turkey festival held sway great interest was taken in the scores of the marksmen, and the members of the California Schuetzen Club put in a good dzy’s work not onlv in bullseye shooting but in capturing turkeys as well. The day was hardly one for gocd scores, for tne light on the targets was uncertain and the sun failed 1o make its presence known throughout the entire day. The following scores and prizes were won by the membars of the California Schuetzen Clubin their regular montkly bullseye shoot: First_prize, F. C. Miller, 165; second prize, y third prize, J. B. Every member of the organization was eager to take a turkey away for Tranks- giving dinuer, ana the following scores resulted: First prize—Captain F. Attinger 66 rings; second—Jonn Utschig 64, B. Jonas 61, F. Kommer 64, H. Schroeder 60, Charles Ri- dolpz 59, 0. Burmeister 58, August Lang 58, Adolph Utschig 58, William Glindemann 58, On the ring targets in Fred Schueman’s contest for turkeys there was considerable shooting, and Charles Thierbach and Wil- liam Glindemann took off the honors and the largest number of turkeys. At the bowling allev William™ Glinder- maan managed to break all records, ana when he left for the city he had from this source alone twenty turkeys. The shoot- ing did not cease until dusk. Philo Jacobi, one of the founders of the Cali- fornia Sckuetzen Club, had charge of the day's festivities, having in spite of the doctor’s orders got out of bed to attend and superintend the shoot. Three weeks agoa biood vessel burst in_Jacobi’s leg and since that time he has suffered greatly from the effects. i Now that the great turkey shoot.is over the marksmen are looking forward to the final shoot of the year, to take piace the third Sunday in December at the Cali- fornia Schueizen Club’s grounds, near San Rafael. i Tggee I THE MILITARY MARKSMEN. It is soin business; it is so in war; it is so 1n Christian work.
