o0 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, : NOVEMBER 19 1897, TEMPEST T0SSED RST CHOICES Five Straight Favorites Bowled Over at Oak- land. Judge Denny Led From Start to Finish in the Handicap. Horatio, at Lengthy Odds, Downed a | Crack Lot of Sprinters—Doyle Nearly a Surprise. 1t eating a turkey dinner on Chanks- | giving day at Dswson City proves a more expensive pastime than landing on 8 win- ner was at Oakland track yesterday, then | the inhabitants of the snow-locked little city of the nortoern gold fields are :in need of the sympathy of the civilized world. The han.icappers and the wise men of the turf went amiss, and if Bliss Rucker, a favorite, had not captured the last race of the day, thereis no teliing how many speciators would have been com- pelled to take advantage of the bank- ruptey act. The attendance was large, and the book- makers enjoyed a feast such as has not falien to their lot for days. The talent tumbled over each other in the hustle to get their money on and the layers of odds kept it all. This too, in the face of all condiiions favorable toracing; a beauti- ful day and a lightuing fast crack, | s The principal cause for this grand dis- play was the defeatsof the well-played favorites: Heidelberg, Zuaata, St. Cala- tine, Wheel of Fortune and Joe Terry. Possibiy all were beaten on their merits. The first favorite to give tackers a shock was Heicelberg. He was heralded | asa good thing for the opening mile and a sixteenth run, and if his showing is v line on his capabiiiiies he shouid be | relegated to the milk wagon service. Widow Jones with J. Woods and 89 pounds in the saddle, the only starter 10 have the odds rubbed, took the purse in a drive from Outaway. Billy McCloskey, a 100 to 1 choice, finished in the show. The | winner was plaved down from 8 to 5to 1. Four choice specimens of ihe thorough- bred started in the seven-furlong run for two-year-olds, with Zapata closiuga 6 t0 5 | favorite. In & punishing drive ihrough the stretca Donztor, the 3 to 2 second choice, ridden by I. Morse, led the favorite past the judges nearly a lengti 1n 1:29. | 3> Happy downed Espirando for third b ace, I : More trouble followed. A six-furlong scramble for all ages was the cause of the disturbance. Beliicoso, with 112 up, at first opened favorite at odds oi 8 to 5, but tne public seemed to have soured on J. | Nagiee Burke's sprinter and he receded to threes. The chestnut filly St. Calatine, carrying 81 pounas, undoubtediy carried the most money, finaliy closiig an 8 to 5 favorite. F.eur de Lis was also exiensively supported, going over to the post second in demand. Horatio bad quite a number of friends whno ook the 1210 1 chalked against him. As figured by the backers of the latter horse Beliicoso, flectest of icot, skipped away in front with all but Piggott on Horatio breaking their necks to catch him. Whien well into the stretch Piggott brought Horatio up on the inside, and with all the oihers looking for hammocks won cleverly by a lenetn irom Beliico o, in the fast time of 1:133{. Peixetto, away poorly, was a close thira. The mile and a furiong handicap, with a field of six lining up, was another per- | plexing probiem. Every horse in the race | was bicked. Wheel of Fortune, in at 111, | was made a false favorite with oddsof 11} 10 5abont her at post time. Installator, | with tus 118 up, went back from 6 to 8 and 10to 1. Osticr Joe had a good following and a select few strung Lheir checks on the chances of the other black Lorse, Judge Denny. This latter horse turned up the winner. Leading from tbe jump, Piggott pever relinqui-hed the lead, finishing at the end a length in advance of imp. | second and third at & ratio of 60 and 40 per Trance, against which 12 to 1 was laid. Instal ator ran a remarkably good race | (ending up in tie show), when it is con- sidered tus winner equaled the coast record for the distance, 1:53. Ostler Joe tratied in second positioa to the stretch, when he began to Ilalter. “The Wheei’ never looked daneerous, evidentiy having lost her keen edge, Doyle, a 75 to 1 shot, played down to 30, came within an ace of landing the fifth event, over a wile and a sixteenth, de- cided under selling conditions. Making the pace from the outset the outsider, rid- den by H. Brown, was only collarea and beaten oat the last sixteenth by Mamie | Sco't, a 6 to 1shot, with Jones up. Joe | Terry, the 8 to 5 choice, finished back in the ruck. Bliss Rucker faced the barriera6tob choice in the final six-'utlong jaunt, and won as he pleased froix Free Lady. AT T TRACK ITEMS. Frank Brown, trainer of Doyle, was tempo- rarily suspended by the judges after that norse’s improved showing 1a_the mile and a sixteenth =clling aftair penaing a further in- vestigation. . Melntyre's ride astride Personne on Tueaduy, when he headed out Lady Hurst and Mar- quise, was one of 1hat yYouug man's annual efforts, and another like it may not be expecied beiore Christmas, 1898 Joe Piggott is riding in the best form of anv jockey at the treck. His handling of Horatio Was u very artistic piece of saadle work. Hughey Jones was very wrathy over the de- cision of Judge Murphy in refusing io further accept the entry of Mainstay, and has turned the liorse over 10 the charge of Trainer Jimmy McCormick, who will keep a cazeful watch on ihose “peculiar sweats,” and report the vary- ing changes o the officials. Friends of the peneiler intimete that a decision rendered {rom the swnd at St. Louis, where Judge Murphy presided last summer, ‘and ovar whicn the bookmaker registered a “kick,” has scme- thing to do with prejudicing the official again-t the big Mariner horse. The decision in rej:cting the horse’s entry seems the mos absura ever rendered in this section of the country. Mainstay is an_exceedingly fast horse, and if he was “-pulled”’ 1u any of his re- cent races, and same can be proven, horse, jockey and owner should have been ruled cff. J1%he norse is an erratic one of the in-and-ou: order there are many others of the same sort, ard his entry should be taken. The Horsemen's Protective Association from recent developments is beginning to assume tangible form, at least {rom all indications. The track magnates frown when the neme is mentioned and there may be a small revolu- ion in turf sffairs “ere the snow flies” One of the “kicks’ regisiered against the Onkland association is in regard 10 the money paid for cratching ent ics, which at the track over the bay all reverts to’ the association. At Ingle- side it is divided between the horses finishing cent respectively. 1f matterscannot be smi- cably adjusted in regard to raising the amount of purses 10 te raced for, & third track iseven hinted at by some of the more enthu- siastic owners.
