CISCO CTALL, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1897 e DTG T SNERSRR B o s MISFORTONES OF A WHALER Two Men Deserted and Two Whales Are Lost After Capture. Contradictory Reports About the Sailing of the Battle- Ship Oregon, Great Enthusiasm Among Naval Militiamen Over the Coming of the Marion. The whaling bark Horatio that got in last Wednesday night is one of the un- fortunates. The bone and oil she brought in will not pay expenses, <o the crew will be paid off wiih the proverbial doliar. the voyage two of the crew, 1 Silva and “Jim” Frazer, deserted in order to join the sealing schc T, Golaen Fleece. The lattsr is owned in Guam and was to return there as soon as the cruise was over. The deserters joined the schooner at Hakodate, and from there the crew of the Horatio say she went to the Copper Island rookeries. The captain and seven of the crew of the Golden Fleece lost their way in a fog and were captured by the Russians and put In jail at Petro- pauloisky. An Erglish cruiser came along soon afterward and her captain se- cured their release and took tiem to Yokohama. The Horatio was in hard luock during the entire season. On one occasion, wher the bozts were all out, the one com- manded by Third Matc Joseph Chase was approaching a whale when another mam- mal came up under the boat and nearly stove it in. A few minutes later there was not a whale in sight. Again, when tbe Horatio was entering the Sea of Okhotsk a whale was killed and the work cf cutting up began. A storm came up and Captain West had all he could do to save the vessel, so the whale was lost. On a third occasion a whale was struck and three voats were fast to it. Night came down, however, and the toats had to cut the mammal adrift. Tne battle-ship Oregon has been the subject of considerable aiscussion during the last few davs. Different reports have had her bound in haif adozen different directions, until now no one <eems to know just where she is going. Yesterdav morning ail shore liberty was siopped and the starboard anchor was taken in. It was then d that the battle-ship was going to Sausalito for the night and Thence to sea for larget practice. During the afternoon -everal of ihe sailors came a-hore and laughingly remarked, “It's up anchor in the morning and sucre liverty in the afiernoon.”” Ail bands are to b- aboard again this morning. According to the first reports the Or gon was to have sailed yesterday for En- senada and irom -there for Magdalena Bay, where the men were to have three ys target practice with the big guns. Then she was to make arun down the coast and test the guns on the way, and now she 18 to goto Sausalito. On Monday she will start for the open sea, but how far she will go nobo.ly bui the captain seems 10 kuow. The Pacific Steam Whaling Company is preparing to enter the St. Michael trade next spring. It is negotiating in New York for a steamer and w:ll probably have two ready for the trade by next March. 1: will also run the steam~rs Walcott and Thrasher in the Copper River trade. The Oceanic Steamship Compzny’s Ala- meda sailed for Austraiia yesterday. She 100k away, besides the members of the Frawley sompany, an unusually large numoer of cauin and steerage passengers. Tue steamer Claudine sailed for Honululu also during the morning, but the Alameda will probably beat her by forty-eight hours into port. Captaiu Turner of the Naval Battalion will pay a visit to Mare Isiand to-morrow to have a look over the Marion. He does not want the warship’s spars removed, nor does he want her housed in. ToeGovern- ment will probably grant the request, and then the members of the battalion will be juvilant. The Harbor Commissioners wil be asked 10 give the vessel permanent dockroom at one of the wharves, and as all the members of the board are in favor of doing everything possibie to help along the battalion, only the question of loca- tion remains to be settied. As soon as the Marion is safely moored 1o the wha; everything beionging to the batialion ve put aboard and the present quarters given up, thus effecting a saving ol $300 a month, which wiil be expended on tue vessel. New recruits are pourmg in, a band is being formed, and soon San Fran- cisco wili be able to boast of the lurgest and most efficient body of naval militia- men in the United States. Itis the intention of the officers and men to celevrate the change from the Camanche to the Marion by a reception and ball. Assoon as the man-of-war has Leen put in first-rate order the function will take vlace. It is the intention of the officers to em- ploy a regular drill instrucior who witl always be at hand to lock after the men. | The schooner Volant has beea pur- chased by H. C. Larsen, tne big collier Peter Jebson by Joun Rosenfeld’s Sons, the schoonzs General Banning oy Captain W. Olsen, and the oid whaler Alaska by aptain Cogan, late of the Thrashe. Capiain Thomas, late of the schoon J. N. Ingalls, will be master of the Gen- eral Banning, and the vessel will be put in the Mexican trade. The police are now looking for the sloop Anna Catherins, which sailed for parts unkeown last Wedne:day. They think that some one wno s ‘‘badly wanted”’ was among those wuo formed Lhe crew of the little craft. Emile Pagot,'a returned whaler, is after bLis iather’'s esiate. The money was ali lelt to him, and his 1wo_sisters were cut off with a dollar each. Pagot is now of age and has agreed to divide with his sisters, so the guardian of the iatter is going to help him to get the money. Pagot got back here a week ago on the whaling bark Gayhead. The Sullivan Wing of the Democracy Will Meet Monday Night to Reorganize. The finance and campaign committees | the Democracy | of the Rainey branch of met last night in Judge Danyerfield's courtroom. Tne most important business transacted was the raising of a campaign fund to pay off a few ousstanding bills for hall rent, and it was quickly and neatly carried out according to programme. Major Harney had scarcely time to an- | nounce the object of the meeting before George Love ciaimed the attention of the committee. sembly district.” econd the motion,” chimed Dr. Billy Gavigan, who was seated at Love’s right. The motion went through without a dissenting vote. “I have a list of names here, added Love, *of men who could do the collect- | It ing, but I don't want to present it. would look too much like a prog-amme.’ “That's woat it is,”’ ejaculated Julius Ca:ar Saulman, who was among the in- vited guests at the council. Major Harney frowned severely at Saul- man and put an end to ail further talk of programmes by announcing that he would appoint the campaign committeeman in each district 10 look after t.e gathering of the nesded coin. “Whose going to hold the money?”’ anxiously inquired one of the committee- men. *“That's <0,” said Love, have & treasurer. we ought to I nominate Thomas Burk= from the Thirty-seventh District.” | “Second it,” ejaculated Gavigan. “Elected,” declared Ha:n'y, and the work of the finance commitiee was over for the night. The campaign committee then went into executive session and discussyd the matter of gettinz ready for the Frecholder election. Itwasdecided to hold meetings in each of the eizhteen Assembly districts next Monday nizht to elect five delegate« to a Freebolders’' convention to be held next Wednesday nigh'. The conveniion will have but litile work to do as it is generally believed that t e ticket selected by the Republicaa County Commitice to-aay will be indorsed. The following changes were announced in the campaign committee: Twenty- ninth District, James K. Colbert to succeed Samuel Braunnart; Thirtieth District, Joseph Cunningham, vice T. Fiizpstrick; Thirty - fifth Distrlet, C. O’Callaghan, vice James F. Butler; Thirty-seventh District. Thomas H. Surke vice Major Harney: Fortieth Dis- trict, William Sheehan vice M. C. Has- 1t, and Forty-third District, Raleigh P. Hooe vice George Marve. Harney resigned becau‘e of his election as chairman of the general commitiee and the others whose places were filled are going to serve with the Sullivan wing of the Democracs. The general committee of the Democ- racy, presided over by Colonel Sullivan, will ‘meet i1n Native Sons’ tuiiding Mon- day night to organize and adopta new constitution. The Man Who Killed His Father ; How he Feels About It. THE SUNDAY CALL. Glmu&xmmuumaj LEFT HIM WOUNDED. The Driver of a Milk Wagon After Running Over Patrick McGonigal Abandons Him. While crossing Annie street, between Jessie ana Mission, at 1o’clock Wednesday morning, Patrick McGonigal was knockeu down and severely injured by a milk wagon. McGonigal was on his way home at the time. A milk wagon came along and the driver, evidently not seeing him, ran over iim, The man sustained quite a severe cuton the back of his head and the ninth and tenth ribs on the lef: side were broken. The driver did not stop after the acei- | dent, but drove on, leaying the man in an unconscious condition on tne street. Some men coming along saw the injured man and took him to the County Ho:- pital. It is thought the man will recover. He was a laborer and resided at the Ne- vada House. e gl THE FISHERMEN ANGRY. Lively Raids Among the Illegal Stur- geon Catchers by J. H, Davi J. H. Davis, one of the patroimen of the Stat Fish Commission, returned from the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers yesterday and reporied having taken a very large amount cf illegal sturgeon gear from the waters of the streams. These gears consist of long stout lines of the best material, that are strung out into the rivers and held in place by anchors and floats. Each line hooks, and no matier what kind of fish strikes the hooks 1t is sure to be caught, for the more it struggles the more hooks become fastened into it. The use of this teck.e has been prohibited by law, ana the mere possession is evidence of guilt. Davis was out ten days, and he dragged for the lines oi eleven camps. As a resuit of his labors he confiscated 10,000 feet of sturgeon lines, fifty anchors and over 55.- 000 hooks, the whole being valued at not less than $500. As a result oi this raid there is less of these fish in the markets than usual and the dealersare notin a good mood in consequence. ———————— His Thigh Broken. William Brooks, 70 years of age, was thrown 52, at the courtroom of the su.d | IFom & truin at Third and Townsend streets while returning from Ingieside last evening and sustained & fracture of the thigh. The old man was on the platform when the train stopped, and the crovd of peuple endesvoring 10 alight jorced him from the platform to the grourd. e was removed o the Receiving Hospital, where the fracture was reduced. ———— Caught Betweeu the Cars. Eugene Leed, employed by the Southern Pacific Company as a switchman, was caught between the cars at Sixth and Townsend sireats Isst evening and suffered a fracture of lbe leg below the knee.
