18 HELP WANTED-Con!inued. 1 _________—_———__*—__—-——-———————'———'——__:——_‘— e e e DISEASE TN SCHOOL. Serious Complaint Made of the Condemned Haight Primary. Petitions to the Boards of Education and Health to Have It Closed. Some time ago the Board of Health con- demned the Haight Primary School, on Mission street, between Twenty-fifch and Twenty-sixth, because of the unsanitary condition of the premises. Attention was first attracted to the school on account ot the number of the pupiis who were taken down with diphtheria and kindred dis- eases. After the condemnation nothing was doue in the matter of putting the premises in order or closing the school. In consequence of the lack of action one of the te-idents of the Mission, whose children attends this school, decided to have something done, as he did not want his family to become sick or to take the chiiaren from their studies. The gentle- man is J. W. Bird of 3236 Mission street. Fearful that his little ones wou.d become ill from the effects of the disease germs that must be in the place, he took them ou' of the school. Yesterday morring, in company with several other residents of the locality, he went to the school and made an examina- of the premises. He was so aston- ished at what be saw he at once la'd the matter before Dr. Morse, who advised him to place the situation as he saw it before the Board of Eiucation and the Board of Health, with a view of having either of these bodies take steps towaru closing the schooi. Mr. Bird is also a member of the Eureka Society for the Protection of Children and be lald the mater before that budy. but 10 no purpose, as the case properiy be- Jongs 1o the two boar:s mentioned. Mr. Bird, in speaking of the ¢omdition of the school, said: *The many cases of sickness among the school children of the Huight Primary School made me very un- eusy, as 1 do not want my tamily to con- tract any of the dise that seem to come from the piace. I am a practical plumb-r, but still I wanted some one to g0 with me when [ made an examinu- tion of the premises, and a neighbor went with me. *We made an examination of the closets and found that every sanitary law known had been violated. There was no chance for flushing and no opportunity for the escape of the sewer gas except up through the floors. Tuere is no wonder that the cnildren sick, and we are satisfied that there will be disease in that schoo! as long as that condition of affairs exis:s.”’ Mr. Bira has now taken up the matter and does not intend to let it drop unti comething 1s done. To-day he will start out with a petition to be signed by the residents of the Mission whose chiidren attend that school, asking the Board of Health and the Board of Education to close the school until it is put in the best oi condition. He expects to have hun- dreds of names, and at the nex: meeting of toe bodies named he will present it. es FRATERNAL DEPARTMENT. Companions of the Forest.
