T HE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1897 (B o Tl i s o CHE BAR: RRANOISEH AT, MONDAY, NOwEMBER I tew o . L00L DARING OF A BURGLAR Mrs. Van Vliet, 1210 Ellis Street, Surprises Him at His Work. He Had the Assurance to Tell Her He Was a Painter in Search of a Job. The Man Escaped, Although Chased by the Servant Girl and a Lady Visitor. Several detectives are searching for a tall, stout, weil-aressed man who has been committing numerous daylight burglaries in the Western Addition Saturday morning about 10:30 o'clock some children saw him climb up a ladder in the rearof the residence of Maurice Van Vliet, 1210 Ellis street, and enter the house through an open window. Mrs. Van Viiet, a lady friend and the servant-girl were in the house at the time. Mrs. Van Viiet was not feeling very well and was in bed. She heard heavy foot- steps coming from the servant-girl’s room, and thinkine something was wrong ‘she jumped out of bed ana throwing on her dressing-gown walked out into the hail- way. She saw a tall, stout, well-dressed man standing in the shadow and asked bim, | “What do you want here?”’ | #I am a painter,” coolly replied the burglar, “and was just examining the paintwork around th Don’t be afraid; I won't harm you. At that moment the se had gone to her room, came and said some one been her room and had stolen ber taininz $10. ‘The burglar did not stand upon the ‘or- | der of his going, but rushed downstairs | and ont into the street. The servant-girl ana Mrs. Van Viiet's Iady friend ran after him and foliowed him, shouting for the who aning ot nsacking se, con- rvant-girl, pur volice, along Ociavia sireet to Mgyrtie avenue, where they lost sight: ot him. Seversl carpenters were working on a building opposite the Van Viier residence, but none of them attempted to join in the chase. If Mrs. Van Vliet had not been upstairs in her bedroom the burglar would proba- bly have ransacked all thebedrooms and got-away with -a lot of valuabie articles. The police were at once notified, but no arrest has yet been made. *T was a bit afraid,"’ said Mrs.'Van Vliet yesterday. whils speaking of the burglary. | U] knew the man was a burglar woen 1| spoke to him, and if he nad not veen so big and strong we might have kept him in the house till assistance arrived. Four years ago next month our house wasentered by two burglars and all my jeweiry and other articles were stolen, and it struck me when 1 saw the man that he was one of the burglars, as they were never caught. If I had been dressed I wonld have foliowed him myself until some one had caught him. “*Before he entered our house he tried to getinto the one two doors below, but was discovered by the Chinese servant, who asged him what he was doing and got an answer that he was trying to open the front door.”” ON SABBATH OBSERVANCE. Our Sports Sai d to Be Sinking in Moral | Standard Because Practiced on Sunday. The Rev. John Stephens of Simpson Memorial Church preached a sermon last | night in strong condemnation of the grow- | ing disregard of the Sabbath. He took his text from a clanse in- the 13th verse of the 58th chapter of Isaiah: “‘Call the Sab- | bath a delight.” He said in part: | “The D.vine Being is under no obliga- tion to us to make any part of our life a delight. If he had chosen to make it three days of service instead of ove, he would have had a perfect right to do so. He micht have made the service so bur- densome that like the worm we would turn, bnt it would have availed us noth- ing. God_ has bestowed many benefits upon us. He has given us the holy Sab- bath to guide us on the path.of peace, the most blessed and bright, the emblem of the eternal rest. “The command of God concerning us is that ‘we be of good cheer.’ Ido not think that the Lord intended the Sabbath to be burdensome ‘to us. The old Puri- 1ans placed such laws upon the statute books as made it twenty-four hours of venance, but God said, ‘Call it'a delight.’ All that I have to say to-night will be grouped around that commard, ‘Call it a delight.” But we degrade ourszives when we say we are capable only of animal de- lights, as eating, drinking, going on ex- cursions, bicycle racing and attending | baseball games. We should try to get the Christian delights out of life ana we can- not do it unless we keep holy the Sabbath day. Weshould cail the Sabbath a de- lignt because it gives us an opportunity to lay up treasures in heaven.’’ | The speaker quoted Caspar Whitney, | sporting editor oi Harper's Weekly, as saying that California sports were degen- erating because the srorting men insisted i on Sunday races and matches and the | people who go out on Sunday are not such as can maintain sports at a high moral stanaard. e o HOTEL ARRIVALS.
