10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1897. AIRSCAFELDER'S NEW DISCOVERY Cats and Rats at the County Hospital Infected With Consumption. The Disease Contracted in the Interests of Science and Humanity. Nocturnal Coughing Heard Between the Partitions of the Elee- mosynary Institution. Dr. Joseph O. Hirschfelder, the discov- erer of oxtuberculin, the new consump- tion cure, which has been indorsed by a committee of the faculty of the Cooper Medical College, and which is being in- vestigated by the Pasteur institute at Paris, the Medical School at Lyons, France, and the meaical department of the Belgium Government, has been work- ing on his cure for months at the County Hospital. The doctor in his highly interesting ana what promises to prove beneficial study has injected a large number of guinea pigs and rabbits with the sputum from consumptive patients. The back yard ot the hosvrital is filled with these animals in all stages of the disease. The hospital cats have caught the infected animals, and they are now suffering from tubercu- losis. The felines have communicated the disease to the rats, and now nighuly in the ceiling and between the partitions is heard the vigorous coughing of the rats, mournfully proclaiming the advance of science and death, while a cat concert in the back vard, to the edification of the patients, is interrupted by more coughing of a consumptive character. The animals infected with the sputum have the same symptoms as a human be- ing with consumption. In the first stages of the disease the cougn is mild. Asit advances the cough becomes more aggra- vated, the animal loses flesh and rapidly becomes emaciated. It loses its appetite and awaits death with a philosophy whici is p'tiful to behold. Oxytuberculin is taken from an animal in an advanced state of consumption, Dr. Hirschielder’s theory being that simi- lar poisons counteract the effects of each other. PRTER JACKSON'S TOUR The Champion Will Spar With Billy Elmer in Northern Cities, What Pugilist Corrigan Has to Say of Sharkey and His Show in Vallejo. Peter Jackson, the champion colored pugilist ef England and Australia, has grown weary of waiting for a match with some heavy-weight who aspires for cham- vionship honors, and will soon make a tour through the Northwestern cities with & vaudevitle company. All of the prominent cities of th e North west will be visited, and as the colored gladiator has numerous friends and ad- mirers in Oregon and Washington, doubt- less his show will be well patronized by all classes. It is yumorea that Jackson’s sparring artner wil! be Billy Elmer, the thespian. Imer, although many pounds less in weight than Jackson, is tall and graceful on the stage, and having a good knowl- edge of the manly art should make an ex- cellent partner for Jackson. T.e champion says that his traveling tour will not deter him from signing arti- cles with any fighter who has backing to the extent of $5000. Peter wants a side bet simply as a guarantee that his op- ponent means business. Jackson does not approve of making matche~ with men who are looking only to the distinction they may gain by baving their names published 11 the papers. Patsy Corrigan has a great opinion of Lansing, the pugilist who whipped bhim in Vallejo a few evenings ago. He thinks Lansing can “do” a nnmber of heavy- welght pugilists who aspire for champion- ship honors. *‘I made a great mistake in fighting in Vallejo under the suspices of a club that was managed by Sharkey,’’ said Corrigan. *“Why, Snarkey is & black sbeep in his own town. The sports actnally refused to patronize the snow because Sharkey was interested in it, and as a result we had a8 poor paying house. The next time 1fight I will see to it that Sharkey has nothing to do with the game; he natural-born hoodoo, and that’s no lie.” POLICE TRIBUNAL, An Officer Fined for Unofficerlike Con- duct and Another for Neglect of Duty. The Police Commissioners met Wednes- day night, theirtime b ing wholly occunied in hearing the testimony in the cases of Policeman Robert Lean and Policeman Fred Smith. Lean was charged with unofficerlike conduct 1n faising a disturbance in the telephone office on Pine and Steiner streets on October 17 becanuse of delay in connecting him with the Central police station when he telephoned from a grocery 10 ask to be excused from auty, owing to his wife’s serious iliness. He was fined $25. Smith was charged with neglect of duty in allowing James G. Bennett, the would- be murderer and suicide, to escape from the Receiving Hospital on the night of October 13. He was fined $100. After dispo-ing of these cases the Com- missioners adjourned, all apparently in peace and harmony. HOTEL ARRIVALS, BALDWIN HOTEL, 7 Bleaur, San Jose R J R Aden, Vallejo Morrls.
