8 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, OCTOBER 23 1897 o e e e ————— e —_———— e ————— NOTES OF THE NATIONAL GUARD Uniforms to Be Furnished at Less Than Govern- ment Price. The First Regiment Cannot Shoot Because It Has No Firing Range. The Crack Shot of the Naval Militia Makes All but One Out of hemselves jjcreditably. Sergeant Rush wiil come up af regularjintervals to drill the com- Jany. . \'X)SALIA,OCL 24.—Company E of this eity hss been taking much interest in the last State shoot for this year, which tukes place on the 25th. A number of the boys expect to e cur: the privilege of going to Sacramento to participate in the State contest for a gold medal by those who rank in the distinguished marksmen class. Lieutenant Medley of Modesto will supervise the rifle contest o the 25th. He is inspector of rifle practice. Captain Ward entertained Lientenant Lock- wood of Troop Clast Friday nizhi. Dr. Straube, surgeon of the troop, was also present. The lieutenant has been granetd aleaveof absence for three months, and he has started for Wachington. Dr. Straube will soon take th2 examination at San Francisco, with a view to !\rlomodon from the rank of hieutenant to cap- tain. William Murray, a private of Troop C, was brought down from the troop camp Saturday a Possible. In the matter of furnishing uniform blouses &nd trousers to the National Guardsmen some curiosity has been aroused as to how the firm of Pettibone Bros. will be able to furnish these acticies for the price bid, which isa tew cents lower than what the United States army clothe ing department can furnish the same for. The specifications call for the same kind of cloth as i8 furnished the United States army as to color and quality end for same kind of linings, buttons and other things. The uniform board has allotted $8 per man in each company and the captaius of com- panies will draw against this amount for such blouses and trousers as may be required and what may Temain to the credito: the com- pany will be used to procure such other ar- ticles of uniform es are most needed. One thing above all others, for the sake of uni- formity, that the guard needs is the uniform cap for the men. The officers of companies have the regulation cap, some of the men in the ranks have caps that are not of the regu- lation pattern and many heve nocaps at all. Outof the surpius the companies could pro- cure caps which cost about 85 cents each. It was suggested to Colonel Smitn of the FirstRegiment Infantry, whois a memberof the upiform board, that it would be well to have, before requisitions for uniforms ere sent in, an Licutenant C. V. Otto, Commanding the Fifth Division, Naval Militia. officer or officers detailed for that purpose ex- amine the blouses and trousers each company has, segregate the serviceable ones from the unserviceable and have requisitions made in | accordance with the actual need of the com- pany. The colonel said, “That is a good sug- gestion, and I think I will have that done in the First.”” He also said that when it is ascer- tained what the companies need most, after blouses and trousers shall have been fur- nished, the board will call for bids for such articles, The request of the First and the Fifth for an extension of time in which to engage in target practice has been granted, October being named as the month i1n which the shooting shall be done. But the First, through Colonel Smith, has been forced to ask for a further ex- tension on the ground of inability to secure a range. The site on Spring Valley Water Com- any property, near Ingleside, which had en selected for a ranze, was found upon in- vestigation would cost too much to put in order. Another and better site has been discovered on the seme property, and arrangements are being made to secure it. The site is north of Ocean avenue. He accidentally ex- ploded his pistol and the bullet pierced hus hand, shattering one of the bones. He siarted for the Presidio Saturday night. RR T HERE FROM BUENOS AYRES. Juan Felix Brandes, a Youth of Polished Manner and Big Enterprises. At the Palace Hotel and just arrived here from his home in Buenos Ayres is a young man of prepossessing appearance named Juan Felix Brandes, who dresses immaculately and almost in the height of fashion and talks with the ease and fluency of an accomplished diplomat and experienced society men. ncidentally he gives it out that he is making a study of coffee countries with a view to future exiensive investments, and that 1f Barrios succeeds in tiae present revolution in Guatemala he will soon visit tnat country. which to-day is producing a better general grade of coffee than Brazil. He says that Buenos Ayres, with its population of 700,000 persons, is probably the most cosmopolitan city in the world, and certainly the most extravagant; that it isremarkable for its magnificent, palace- like buildings ana its beautiful pablic gardens. He discusses commercial, po- litical and diplomatic affairs of various South American couniries with rapidity and assurance, but with indifferent ac- curacy.
